That ugly fuckin' thing? It looked like some fabric you'd use to wrap a baby up in. Or have a picnic on. Or a late night fuck, probably. Overall, not a style that I would have volunteered to put on my body. But whatever. "I mean," I shift in my seat to face the green-haired alien of a man, "they were talkin' to us about the new industry change. How we were now luxury and should represent that." Luxury my ass.. "That looked more like the old district eight than much luxury, but what, were we supposed to just be a curtain rod?" I wouldn't have known what luxury included. Still don't, really, but I guess that's for the bitches back home to find out.

"What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?"

Nothing? I expected nothing less than a bunch of stuck-up, snobby people with more colors on their face than a bag of candy. "Maybe the food." My stomach grumbled to the idea of another slice of lasagna; odd enough. I thought I was done with that layered pasta shit. Can't ever get away from the BASE, huh? "I didn't think I'd eat as much." I purse my lips for a moment. "Actually, no, I knew I was gonna eat. You're gonna give an athlete an all-you-want buffet and tell to wait?" Hell no, dude.

”Tell us what a typical day in your shoes is like back home. Do you work? Do you have any hobbies or secret talents?

Well, damn. I don't really do much. "Well, I guess lately I haven't been doing shit." No lie, though, what was I supposed to do? Sit and publish poetry? That shit is for me and Woods. Not the world. "I'm normally on the field before the Rose shit happened. I was on Eight's exy league." I kinda missed that shit. Mostly because we got to rough a few bitches up for fun. Now, I'm gonna be doin' it for my life. "We normally hang out together. They're my guys for the most part." Maybe Aytac could get kicked to the curb, but we're a pack in the end. A pack of teenage boys who do stupid fuckin' shit. Like this. Part of me wonders if Woods has torn a new one in them yet. I hope so, man. He's the only one gettin' a victors village key. Do they have keys? Or is it like... a fingerprint for the door? I gotta ask about that when I'm movin' in. Maybe I could get one of them security systems. Order one from three that's programmed to shock a bitch I don't like when they step on my turf.

"I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to?"

I don't know, man. Maybe to Aytac. Get home and punch his teeth out. Ship his ass back to Nine if I could. "My mom, probably." She don't deserve to be alone like this now. Hell, I took her for granted. No matter how much I spent at the BASE, no matter how I'd only stay at home if she was cookin'. Momma was there for me, every single damn step of the way. I always gave my dad credit, but that's coz' he's gone. The things that deserve the most love aren't given it til' they're gone. It was her that got me into the league, onto the field. Told me not to take shit from anyone. Fuck the league, man. I need my mom.

"She's the one person that never did me wrong." Sure, Woods is there too, but dude's not gettin' a livestreamed love letter. Not yet. "She ain't gonna have anyone anymore. Grandma's dead, grandpa's never sober enough to give her the time of day." I don't even bother giving my dad a thought. "I don't know a single person in this world that loves me more than her." I say it, but I wish I knew that before I left.

"Welcome to the stage, Rene Sumner of district four!" I hear my name, and I can instantly feel my heart leaping into the back of my throat, but hearing the roar of the crowd makes me smile. All I've ever wanted was for this moment. It's terrifying, but I'm prepared. I'm always prepared. I take a deep breath and walk onto the stage, and I wave at the crowd and spin around in my dress before taking a seat in the chair. It's hard to think with all eyes on me, but I can block them out if I actually think about something else while listening to the questions. Just a few minutes and this will be over.

"I must say, your District made quite the splash at the Tribute Parade. Tell us what you were feeling up there! Confident, nervous, excited?"

I pause long enough to think about the question trying to figure out the best words to say. Right now, I know it's important to build the Capitol and everyone involved in getting me ready for the games up. I must play the part.

"I feel confident about the entrance I made. I put my trust in the stylists to make me look good for everyone to see, and if I'm being honest, it was absolutely fantastic, and I would do it all again." Majority of this is a lie, but it's better than nothing, and it's what the crowd wanted to hear. I listen to their roars and applause for only a moment before they're silent again.

"What about the other tributes? Intimidating? Interesting? Irritating?"

I mean the answer is easy. None of them are intimidating. None of them are interesting, but all of them are irritating. But I can't announce that for everyone to hear. "Well, there is one tribute who irritates me, but I'm going to let you all figure out who that is." I can't spill all my secrets here, and maybe that's what they want to hear. I don't know, but I don't wait for anyone to tell me otherwise.

"What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?"

I think back to district four, and I think of all the training centers. None of them compare to what I've seen here. And that's when I quickly think of my answer. "I am from district four, and there we have all these career academies there. It's not the same as here though. Having a variety of stations as well as trainers is impressive to me. I never thought this many training stations existed." I look around and smile as everyone starts cheering again. Of course this is just what they all want to hear. But this is truly amazing, and nothing will ever take that away.

"Tell us what a typical day in your shoes is like back home. Do you work? Do you have any hobbies or secret talents?"

Again, I can't give away all my secrets, so I'll have to think of something. Even if I give the worst possible answer, it's still better than nothing. "I hang out with my family and I love going to swim at the beach. I just enjoy my time and relax. It's the best thing to do in district four." It's just a lie like all of this is. I can't do anything to change anything, but I can't just sit here in silence. At least I'm trying.

"What about romance? Cute as you are, I bet there is someone home waiting, right?"

The question is barely asked, and I know my answer. "Next question." They don't need to know about my life. All they know is what they see, and I'm not giving them any other information.

"And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them?"

Why do they always have to make this so personal? They know enough about me, and that's all they need to know. I'm not sharing my whole life story just so someone will root for me. "My family is my family. They're wonderful. I care about them. They care about me." That's all they need to know. That's all I care about. My family is personal and private, so I just leave it at this.

"I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to?"

The answer is obvious. It's always obvious, and I can't even pretend that I'm wanting to give a different answer. "I want to live. Who doesn't?" I turn towards the crowd and then back towards the interviewer. I'm ready for this to be over with. I want off this stage, but I try to look as calm as I can.

"I'm afraid we're almost out of time. Parting words to the crowd? The tributes? Your friends and family back home?"

It's easy to answer this one, and I nearly blurt out the words, but I manage to keep my tone calm and cool. "I hope this isn't the last interview I do." And then I walk off the stage leaving the cheering audience behind.

"I was both nervous and excited. I was afraid that I was going to fall off the chariot most of the time, but I was so excited that I was finally getting to see all the people. Plus, not to mention, my stylist did a really good job at putting together an outfit. I couldn't wait to show it off."

What about the other tributes? Intimidating? Interesting? Irritating?

"Uh, well, I think they're interesting. Some are always intimidating, but I can't let that stop me from trying my best. Of course, they could easily get the best of me. It's always possible. But I just have to remember that it doesn't matter who is interesting, intimidating, or irritating because at the end of the day we all want the same thing."

What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?

"I would definitely say the food! Just getting to taste food from all the districts has been so wonderful. It gives me somewhat of an idea of what I'd eat if I was from a different district. It's nice trying new things sometime."

Tell us what a typical day in your shoes is like back home. Do you work? Do you have any hobbies or secret talents?

"I love going to the beach and surfing. I always had to wake up super early in the morning, though, because once my siblings woke up, I had to be back at home helping take care of them. Late at night when everyone was sleeping, I would go out and do my own thing as well. Always made time for myself even if it meant sleeping just a couple hours a night."

What about romance? Cute as you are, I bet there is someone back home waiting, right?

"Never had a chance."

And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them?

"My dad left, so I haven't seen him in years. My mom does what she can for us. She's lovely. I protect my siblings and help make sure their needs are met. I make sure they have enough to eat, that they have clean clothes. Things like that."

I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to?

"I'm fighting for hope."

"Live everyday like it's your last, so when your time comes, you won't have any regrets."

What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here? "Maybe it's a little abstract, but you guys are so care-free here, dare I say a little oblivious. And I mean that in a good way! Things don't seem to phase you in the way that it would people at home."

Tell us what a typical day in your shoes is like back home. Do you work? Do you have any hobbies or secret talents? "You flatter me thinking I'm anything special. I wake up, eat breakfast, go to school, say hi to all of my fans. And then, I did my schooling and got the hell out! My fans can be quite stalkerish."

What about romance? Cute as you are, I bet there is someone back home waiting, right? "The ladies.. oh yeah, they're all over me. Every last one, dare I say some of them were a little obsessed? And hey.. I would be too. They've got the cutest nicknames for me as well. Sometimes, it feels like they don't even know my real one!"

And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them? "Oh, they're fine. I'm sure they're freaking out back at home because I'm certainly not the most physically capable person in this Games. But if they hear me here, I want them to know not to be worried."

I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to? "I want to get back home to a new life, a new identity, a new me. I want to start over as the person that I want to be, not what others want to use me for."

They have to tell him who Caesar is.

Lysistrata looks like Karl's personally offended her when he goes into his I'm a farmer, I don't watch television schtick, then decides that in order to remedy this she must jump into a history lesson so dense and off-centred that Karl's still glazed over by the time they plunk him in the interview chair and swivel the chairs around.

It's hard to distinguish any one face when he looks out into the crowd. The lights bleed and blend them all into one bright, blurry mess and makes him feel like he's underwater.

It's a little headache inducing.

"... Hello?"

"Hi."

He blinks.

"Did you - ...are you paying attention?"

"Not really."

Karl watches a bead of sweat fall down Caesar's face, turning greener and greener as it travels through the layers of makeup and glitter and who knows what else. There's another blank track of skin beside it where everything's been washed away. They must've been sitting here a while.

"What was the question?"

"Your... family." It's like he shakes himself, returning Karl's blank stare with a blinding grin and an arm swept out towards the audience, "Your life before the Reaping, of course! We're all so curious."

Karl waits a beat, hesitates, and then takes hold of the microphone attached to his shirt, bringing it right up to this mouth.

"Oh, no you don't have to-"

"I don't think I can talk about that." He says right into the mic, making it come out a bit muffled.

A screech of feedback comes from backstage.

Caesar grimaces and then laughs, wiggles his eyebrows in a very weird way, probably trying to pass it off as a look of intrigue. It just looks like he's having a stroke.

"How mysterious."

"I'm just a farmer." He's got the mic right on his lips now, it sounds awful but there's no stopping it, "We do cranberries."

There's a few cracks about juice and UTIs and the crowd eats it up but Karl is too busy sitting there trying to work out if even saying that was too much. There's a row of Keepers standing along the aisle seats. One of them shifts and Karl grips the little mic tighter.

He tries to look very normal. Like this is an everyday thing. Like he's not currently thinking about the two bodies lying in the cranberry bog back home, unaccounted for.

"Now is it true that those lakes are full of spiders?"

They're not lakes.

And there's a lot more than spiders in them but, "Yeah."

Caesar does a really exaggerated shiver and Karl looks at him like he's a bit loopy. "They're not that bad."

There's always worse things waiting in the water.

Finte said that they were going to try and sell the way Karl unsettles people. Something about the eyes. The unnatural stillness. He said that he wasn't doing it on purpose, but apparently that didn't matter, there's a special brand of creeps out there that would eat it up.

He wonders if it's working.

Do other people actually answer this question honestly?? You'd have to get me loaded first, which I'm open to. They - my styling team - has been limiting my supply of cigarettes so I don't even have that much of a filter. Ha, get it? Filter? Anyhow, no, the other tributes are... fine. Some very fine, if you catch my drift.

The architecture? I'm kidding. I haven't left the Training Center. So really I've just met a bunch of people, including yourself. I guess you? Oh, you like that?

I'm still in school, getting close to graduating. Classes are easy except for english. Who writes essays any more? I've had various after school jobs. Gotta keep my resume looking fresh. I started with a paper route, I've worked in a factory, but I like working in a convenience store the best. You get to talk to people. Hobbies... does smoking count?

What about romance? Cute as you are, I bet there is someone back home waiting, right?

Not exactly. Hoping to have more luck here, actually.

There's not a lot to tell there. I've got one. They're the only family I've got so I can't complain too much.

"Confident. I look good in everything." Despite the outfit representing an industry she despised, she wore it with a prideful mask. Fake it til you make it, as they say. Mirage had no intention of making enemies of the public if she wanted to keep her victory as smoothe as possible.

"A training score won't stop me from getting what I want, but I appreciate their feedback. I can learn from it."

She could, but she may choose not to. Nine was popular right now, and she imagined the sponsors lining up just to hand her the money she needed. Really, as long as she didn't earn a 1, she felt confident she would be noticed by the big spenders.

What about the other tributes? Intimidating? Interesting? Irritating?

"Most people aren't interesting, so let's hope you don't fall asleep watching the rest of the tributes."

There were a couple who had cracked a smile, but Mirage thought of them all as walking ghosts. It was only a matter of time.

What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?

"Everything is bigger. My old house is smaller than the bathroom I use in the Training Center. Can you believe that? I've been missing out for years!"

"I work every night, and I'm my own boss. I always thought I couldn't ask for more, but then I realized I could be making a lot more money if I just came here. That's why I'm sitting here tonight."

"Oh, plenty of people are waiting. And they'll keep waiting."

And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them?

"Sure, if you don't mind a little tragedy. My parents were shot dead for dealing drugs, and I moved to a foster home. There's not much to say after that. I'm sure she's watching us right now and cheering me on!"

A lie. She was probably praying for Mirage's downfall, that old bag.

Oh, well thank you kindly. It wasn't my first time in front of a crowd, I'll say that. People were being just plain lovely cheering for us and carrying on like they were.

How confident do you feel about the games now that you've seen your Training Score?

Well, don't get me wrong: I am proud to be from District Ten, but as y'all know, we don't really do training for this kind of stuff there, so honestly I went into it expecting a lower score as a result. End of the day, I'm pretty happy with what I ended up giving! I think that means maybe the gamemakers might see something in me as a tribute!

What about the other tributes? Intimidating? Interesting? Irritating?

What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?

The buildings! All the walls are so darn thick here! I had to walk on the tips of my toes when I went downstairs to feed the chickens back home or I'd end up waking up the whole house. Meanwhile I was up practicing a hula hoop routine all night for three nights in a row and didn't even get a complaint from whichever District Nine person my stompin woulda kept up!

Tell us what a typical day in your shoes is like back home. Do you work? Do you have any hobbies or secret talents?

Well, like I said before, I usually wake up really early in the morning to feed the chickens. After that I usually get dressed for school, and then after I get home from that I usually practice my walk or Momma has me try on a new dress for a pageant. I'm actually one of the most lauded pageant queens in Ten, fun fact!

What about romance? Cute as you are, I bet there is someone back home waiting, right?

Oh, 'course not! Momma says I'm too young, too busy, and too trusting, and with three strikes you're out! I really wanna focus on finding what my future looks like with me in it before I try casting any of the other roles.

And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them?

Sure! I live on a small farm with my parents and my little brother Austin. Daddy's work means he travels to other districts a lot of the time. When I got reaped he was in District Five helping the locals build more energy-efficient cleaning processes. Momma works hard to keep the farm up and running with our help, of course, and then Austin is about to have his tenth birthday in September. He asked for a cowboy hat as his gift, ain't that precious?

I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to?

My- what a question! I suppose there's nothing special about what I want in this situation. It's not a secret. I'd love to live through it, same as the rest of em I'd hope. Myself, then. I guess I'd be fighting for myself.

"Oh the drinks are definitely a big step up from what I had in district five. I've had a few chances to party it up in the tribute center, and the Capitol does not disappoint."

"Yea well, it's probably best that I came here at this point," he clears his throat, "I had just started this new job at a sustainable energy company, but it's benefactor, Patricia Valfierno, as you all know, unfortunately passed away recently." He shrugs, "I was probably about to get shipped back off to the oil rigs."

"Don't flatter me too much, Caesar, or you might end up back at the tribute center with me tonight." He laughs with the audience before continuing, "But nah, there's been a few girls in my life, but no one currently. Hopefully I can make it back to change it all."

And your family. Sensitive subject, I'm sure, but... could you tell us about them?

"I have a little sister, she just turned eleven." He's quiet for a moment before continuing, "She's at home with my dad. Our mom died back when my sister was born, and I hope she'll be protecting me from above."

I want to know: What is it that you'll be fighting for in that arena? What is it you want to get back home to?

"I'm going to be fighting for my sister, to make it back for her. She's a bit of an artist, and I want to give her the life she deserves with my winnings as a victor." He clears his throat and smiles, "And of course, to not die. That's always a plus."

"We certainly were a point of contention. Sampson's chic designs were definitely not what I had expected for our parade, but we still made a splash so in the end everything worked out for the better. I had been excited during the parade as I knew my adoring fans would get to meet me for the first time. I'm not gonna let any of you down." Dyno winks to the audience.

"A score doesn't match up to the pure brilliance that I will show in the arena."

"The other tributes are interesting, but I don't get intimidated. I'd definitely keep an eye out on the Fours and that Nixton kid from Three. Lots of legacies in this games which we all know is going to make for an interesting games overall."

"What has impressed you most about the Capitol since you've been here?"

"The brilliance of the Capitol is the way people hold themselves here. I love the grace all of the capitolites have and their drive for ambitions. It's really awe inspiring."

"I did a lot back home. I was a career through and through, so most of my days were spent watching past games, learning weapon forms, and also sparring with other career hopefuls. I didn't work back in One because my beautiful mother had been lucky enough to sit on one of the greatest fortunes in One. I do have a secret hobby. You'll all love it, but I think that can stay a secret until the games. You'll see it soon enough!"

"Oh no, I've not had the need for romance. Too many eggs in my basket to be worried about something as simple as romance. After I win, maybe. For now, I'm just here to get that crown."

"My sister is very much a godsend. She's always been much more talkative than me. My mother is very caring and always supportive of me. My father, well, he's eccentric. Always carries a guitar and plays in the square back in One."
