GAMEMAKERS HQ — MORNING

Sloane stands over Chanel's shoulder. In the background, Ruby can be seen giving orders over the shoulders of several younger faces. No matter how often Chanel tries to get in her senior Gamemakers way, she seems to fall short. Chanel can feel Sloane's nail tips digging into the skin of her shoulder, and makes a mental note to wear a sweater tomorrow. Added protection. 
SLOANE. 
Let's test the creepy one shall we? Hit them with the Macromantulas.

CHANEL.
Why them?

SLOANE.
Well, the little one thinks she likes spiders.

CHANEL.
So?

SLOANE.
So, we ruin them for her.

CHANEL.
...right.
Months into this, it hasn't gotten any easier for the team. Chanel knocks heads with every opportunity, halts progress on work that should've been done weeks ago. She's been kicking sponsor calls under the rug for so long her voice mail box filled up. Her new phone is sitting on her desk in front of her now, only two contacts logged.  

The monitor in front of Chanel hums as she activates the module. The training with Lochlan's people on the muttation mechanics infrastructure would've been fascinating if she hadn't been learning the information to weaponize against teenagers. Now she bears the memory with resentment.

Chanel pulls up the opening screen.

CHANEL.
What am I doing here? 

SLOANE.
There, (pointing). 
The image of the Macromantula gets enlarged, taking up more space on Chanel's screen before Sloane flicks it up onto the center mainframe. It takes on its 3D representation there. A zoom in on the Adepti alliance, and the small pack of Macromantuals scattered about a few large patches of moss in the garden. Sato knows what she's doing from here on, but deliberately pretends otherwise. 

CHANEL. 
Now what?

SLOANE.
Now, kill them for god's sake.
The Head Gamemaker rolls her eyes, waltzing away to go and whisper about something with Racnoss out of earshot. Chanel shoots her a nasty look before turning back to the screen, pressing buttons she'd rather not. 

On screen, she watches the pack of Macromantulas scuttle out, pack tactics kicking in, descending on their prey as one.

"I think there's something wrong with mine."

They'd come to a stop where it had all started, making a home on bloodstained sand. It settles like corruption, rusty and ruddy in defiance of having once been something beautiful. They're a little ways away from the scattered remains of the ransacked garden - sat in a diamond-like formation in hopes to cover all sides in case of ambush.

A pitiful excuse for a fire purrs at their feet - upon Adan's insistence that feeding it too much would only attract unwanted attention. Even now he's nervous, picking at the beds of his nails until stinging pain is rewarded with tiny droplets of blood. Is the warmth worth the risk?

Probably not.

It burns anyway.

The little balls of light were cute and warm and Adan figures something bad must be coming if the gamemakers have deigned to be so generous. Princess' even seems to be fucking color coordinated to her which Adan hates so much that it's doubled back and become charming.

His seelie, on the other hand, was a little special - it did not glow so much as it shimmered? It made the same sweet little coos as the others, and he often felt the warmth of it nuzzling against his neck but he had yet to actually see the damn thing.

"Maybe they forget to add the color to it?" He pokes the warping space just in front of him and feels the wrongness of the air there. That's his Seelie, he's sure, but it's more like - "I'm calling her Bubbleboy. 'Cause that's what she looks like," And he grins in spite of himself, so full of joy that it must only invite misfortune. He checks over his shoulder, just in case, shuddering against a slight breeze and-

fucking figures.

The storm bears down upon them rather quickly. He's leaning toward Francine in an instant, making sure the winds don't rip her umbrella out of her hands. Adan had never considered himself a caring boy but Francine makes him want to try anyway.

She's strange in the way that makes others uncomfortable. And they are cruel in their averted gazes and tight-lipped smiles - so eager to escape their uncomfortable feelings that they don't consider how their reaction might sting. People were afraid of Adan back in Nine, often when they had no reason to be. All he'd ever had was nothing at all.

He refuses to be scared of Francine.

"Well, this sucks." An umbrella a few feet away tumbles pitifully through the winds, unreachable. He fishes the fan he'd picked up from the fray and holds it over his head with a pitiful moan.

It offers little relief, but he shares it with Trigger Finger anyway. There's warmth in the place he presses their shoulders together and little else. Adan's teeth chatter, accidentally biting his tongue until it's part way numb. It's weird, not being able to feel his fingers, but at least they don't hurt.

Adan finds a way to complain throughout most of the storm, mostly mumbled under his breath until he's lulled himself into something the resembles sleep. Before he slips away, it occurs to him he might be dying.

He wouldn't like that.

"Keep watch of my soul, Franny. Might slip away without me noticing."

It's a long night.

And a longer morning.

"Can this get any worse?" He glares at Princess and her pretty little umbrella as a parachute flutters to her feet. 'Course she got sponsors, she was a bloody delight. She's harder to hate with that pleased expression, all genuine wonder that makes Adan's throat feel a bit dry.

"Ain't this beautiful?"

"'s nice." He grumbles, because it is.

It all goes to shit after that. "Ha ha! Missed me!" One of the beasties lunges goes wide and Adan holds out his free palm to Princess asking for celebration - "Still lookin perfect, I see."

You know you can smell blood on a breeze? It's an awful realization, joy fading from Adan's expression as he turns toward their companions. It's lucky he's not had anything to eat for twelve hours 'cause the sight makes him nauseous. Spiders bearing down upon Francine and Trigger Finger - "No!" A strangled cry, he grips his sword tighter.

"It'll be okay! They're just some bugs. Big... bugs. Don't worry. And please don't die."

He'll try to do the same.

It took seeing Francine asleep to finally get to the root of her. When she was lying there, little eyes closed and little hands folded together and little chest rising and falling with little breaths: she was only a girl, no more than a few years older than Austin. She found a love of the peculiar and the strange: toed the lines of sanity like she was performing a tightrope routine, probably to make some sort of sense of whatever life had been handed to her back in the rugged woods of Seven. I watched as her seelie burrowed itself beneath her slumbering head to function as a pillow, and then I noticed Adan's careful gaze observing me.

I wasn't sure what about me exactly seemed to be making him so distrustful of me in particular, but every time I seemed to notice him he was fixed on me like I was a subject being studied. Like at any moment I might go crazy. I guess to be fair, in a place like this, I just might've.

I twirled the umbrella resting on my shoulder out of boredom, then heard Momma's voice in my head telling me to stop fidgeting.

"The sun'll be up soon," I whispered. Back home, I would've already been up for an hour or so at this point. The chickens would've been fed, the eggs gathered, I would've already bathed and brushed my hair and picked out an outfit. Austin would probably be playing all two of the guitar chords he knew over and over, a feat that normally set my teeth on edge but now felt downright precious, and Momma would call us down for breakfast just as soon as the sky started to light up.

The misty rain meant that starting a fire had been a nightmare and keeping it going was even worse. But between the four of us and some decent cover, we'd managed to keep it burning strong enough that none of us were visibly shivering. But even with all the weather, the clouds above were turning from a black curtain of starless night into murky blue-gray smoke, lingering above and surely hiding horrors none of us were even creative enough to dream about.

"Do y'all-" I stopped speaking abruptly when I noticed something breaking the cloud bank above. My first instinct- fear- was to assume it was some sort of creature coming to take me away in its clutches. Maybe some oversized bird needing to feed its young, or one of those golden bats that chased people out of the caves last games. But it was slow-moving, and I could make out the flashing of a red light through the curtain of rain. A parachute. My eyes instinctively went to Steele first, because of the four of us, the girl from One was definitely the most likely to have garnered some sort of Capitol favor. Maybe it'd be some terrifying weapon she was secretly amazing with, or a set of armor that'd shield her to victory.

But then the parachute landed in front of me, my name etched atop a wide, flat box tied with ribbon. I looked up at the others as if in apology- me? I could hardly believe it! I took my time opening it, going over my options of what it could be in anticipation. It was too big of a box to be any kind of medicine, too light to be armor or weaponry. Maybe a tent or something we could use for any future weather problems, I'd decided. Or a tarp so we could make something as good ourselves, since something like a whole tent would've surely been too expensive.

"Oh."

Red tulle was all I needed to see in order for me to go right back to District Ten. Every birthday, every holiday, every reward. Boxes like these. Tulle like this. My back was stiff because my guard had been down, but from the moment I recognize it was a gown, I play it off like it's exactly what I wanted. Just like I always did.

I pulled it out and unfolded it. The satin seemed drab in the dull lighting, but was undeniably expensive and well-made. The stitching alone was more expensive than anything I could've ever hoped to get my hands on back home. Frankly, I would've been plum elated to get something like this normally. But getting it here only reaffirmed the fears which already existed within me.

I was still just a pageant queen. That's all I would ever be to the world, wasn't it?

I picked up the accompanying note and read it silently to myself: "From a former Miss Capitol to the current Miss District Ten, don’t ever let them catch you slipping. No one is watched more closely than women in our profession, after all." The name at the bottom read Bambi Salcedo and my breath caught. She was... a bonafide celebrity. Very well-known in the pageant circuit, and a former District One stylist.

"Ain't this beautiful?" I asked no one in particular, tilting my head up to the sky with a thankful smile, "I'm mighty appreciative of the gift."

And I really would've been, if it served any sort of use. But I told myself not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I purposefully avoided eye contact with both Steele and Adan, neither of which even had umbrellas to help shield them from the rain. Half of me hoped they didn't hate me for getting sponsorship. The other half hoped they didn't hate me because of the useless contents. The awkwardness threatened to burn my cheeks, so I used the opportunity to excuse myself and do what I absolutely did not want to do: put the dress on. There were pressed red roses in the tulle at the bottom and a sweetheart neckline.

I was on my way back to the group to show it off when I first heard the chittering. It was a clicking sort of noise, fast and scratchy-sounding against the wet sand. I pulled my skirt up and ran as fast as I could to my bag.

"What in good grace is that?"

These spiders were not ordinary ones. They were horse-sized, for starters. Macromantulas, they were called. Even I had heard of them. They were regularly used in arenas, and for good reason, I reckoned. I've also heard stories of nests being disturbed by livestock back home every once in a whole and completely killing off whole cows and such. They weren't here as a test for future games, then. They knew exactly what these things were capable of, and that meant they were here as a test for us.

Me, standing there in my lovely gown, dry in a wet world, Lemondrop staying nearby because the poor thing didn't like the rain. Me, designated damsel, asked to slay the beast. As terrified as I was, I had no choice.

Wisp comes to her like a ghost and Francine knows it is hers. Like a part of her soul. Like a spirit, but corporeal. Wisp does not speak but Francine smiles as it dances around her head, the colour of the sky at dusk. She knows - like she did with Adan when she first saw him.

"Mine," she breathes. Her hands reach out --

-- Francine has never been afraid of the dark, nor spiders. There's a dead one in her pocket that came to her from the sky, just like Wisp. Mine, she thinks, smiling as their legs crawl and creep toward her. A thousand eyes, they stare at her and she stares back unblinking.

"Mine," - her hands reach out --

Adan's shimmers and Francine's is shadows. She sits quietly, watching their new friends chase each-other. Or rather, Wisp chases Bubbleboy. (let me go- caine, caine.) Bubbleboy doesn't seem to mind, if only a little unnerved, but Wisp comes back as her eyes flutter closed and buries itself near her head.

Do you hear that? Francine thinks, hand stroking her glowing shadows. Do you hear them too?

Maybe Wisp is them. All of their shadows, their whispers, come to let her know she is not alone.

The last thing Francine thinks is that she's not alone. She looks at Adan's face illuminated by the dull fire, smiles.

Falls.

-- it bites. Wisp vanishes.

Most girls her age should scream. Would scream. But what leaves Francine's throat is little more than a gasp, followed by an unimpressed groan. Matron always said she was terrible at making friends. That the other children in her home, once upon a time, found her too abrasive. That's why they lashed out. Was she too much for these creatures - these ones, even, with their hundred eyes and dozen legs and fangs that pierce skin?

Too much, too much, she bonks one over the head with her sword and yells "Bad! No!" - she doesn't want to hurt it, not really, even if it's hurting her. A lot, a lot, where is Wisp? Her shadows are gone, her ghosts are screaming, she groans again and looks for Adan.

But they're swarming them now, "No - wait, stop-" don't hurt them, Adan, Autumn, Steele next no doubt.

"Wait!"

I didn't mean-

They're just scared of me, that's all.

And not in the fun way.

It was sort of like taking the worst shower ever - fully clothed and without shelter. Drowning or- suffocating, even? And yet she's never actually seen something so miserably beautiful. Every fat ass drop of rain practically plopped off the ground and kissed her on the chin as she sat with her head between her knees, fingers clenched around her shins and praying, begging that when she looked up again the horizon wouldn't look so far away.

"I think there's something wrong with mine." Steele glances at Adan's glass-noodle-looking-floating-blob-of-flickering-broth-glow, and then to her own. It appeared earlier than the rest, or at least she hoped so. Steele knew she was crazy but watching some red, bouncing orb of red light bound across open space at her in rather ungraceful loops was one thing, and it seemed the others behaved similarly, but- well, her's tended to get stuck behind rocks.

You know, rocks surrounded by nothing but sand. Spread apart and slick as pavement and still her loud, ass, screeching red beacon blob always managed to get stuck behind rocks. You know, the ones sitting perfectly slick with rain and spaced apart so that not even an actual muttation could get stuck between them?

Yeah, her red Blinky could get stuck behind a puddle. Literally. Poor thing was as drenched as she was.

Steele looks back at her new companion with a shrug in her shoulders and a furrow in her brow. She'd only ever received deals in her life; you know, how one side of a triangle plus the other side of a triangle always measures up to the third side? Deals. The kind like equations. And though she enjoyed the simplicity of knowing all the answers, she sort of wishes it'd been her parachute. Though she'd never say such a thing - of course the strangers you meet are more than what they seem.

Aren't they all?

She was surprised it didn't drift to Francine. Not that Adan didn't deserve it- "s'nice" - orphan slang and all.

"He's right."

And not that Autumn didn't either- "I'm mighty appreciative of the gift." -District 10 twang and all. It was all Steele could do not to tell her she was beautiful.

Sloane put Chanel up against Francine on purpose. 

It's obvious to everyone watching. The Head GM glances over at Chanel and smiles, watching the younger woman get angrier and angrier with every passing second. Chanel, barely contained inferno, she likes Francine the best, creepy girl with no business being so spooky; it makes her a weapon in Sloane's grasp. Chanel thinks her fellow Gamemakers are in this game at this point to mess with her as much as they are here to mess with the tributes. Sloane and Ruby, Ruby and Sloane, they work together like terrible peas in a pod while Chanel is too busy trying to become the match setting fire to the crop. 

One can understand why they don't get along. 

Chanel's makes flourishes over the table in front of her, the machine humming and whirring. Her face is stony, back rigid, watching in masked dismay as the Macromantulas rip ugly gashes into Francine and Steele's ivory skin. 

CHANEL. (muttering)
This is such bullshit.  

SLOANE.
What's that, darling? 
Chanel doesn't reply, just slumps down a little bit further in her chair. Adan Finch's voice comes over her speakers, an echo, keep watch of my soul playing back from the night before. Gooseflesh rises across Chanel's skin, but she swallows, tries not to let the rage in her chest find its voice. 

Her eyes shout it anyway. 

The clicking sounds they make are the worst part for Chanel. The image is awful, but without sound it'd be halfway bearable, maybe feel more like playing one of those violent video games she knows Emi likes to play sometimes. Chanel never really had the stomach for those either though, never found any pleasure in taking away an innocents agency. She's always been much more interested in leaving them to their own choices. Forcing Autumn to fight a horse sized spider in the pouring rain? Not her idea of a productive morning at work.

There were more of them than us. Even the smallest were dog-sized, with long and dexterous legs stretching far past anywhere I could've ran on my own two feet. And they were organized in their assault, attacking all together and scampering around to protect their wounded. The biggest of them were the hungriest. I would've thought their size meant they were the wisest of 'em since you gotta stick around for a while to grow up to the man-sized beasts that they were, but I found each and every one a relentless pursuer. I was struck with the haunting thought that maybe they were wise, and maybe they were attacking without regard despite because they knew at the end of the day they were stronger than we were. They could do more to us than we ever could to them- they outnumbered us, outsized us, and there was nowhere for us to run.

We weren't the highest thing on the food chain anymore.

I didn't mean for the scream of fear to slip past my lips, but there it was as one of the alphas lunged toward me. I raised my arms in time to prevent my face getting eaten, but its legs closed around me. After that, I lost all semblance of couth. I was running around like a chicken missing it's head, squealing like a stuck hog.

"GET OFF GET OFF- G E T I T O F F O F M E ! "

I did the only thing I could think to do, and fell down and started rolling. I could hear it making noises, sounding more like some kind of... frequency than a creature. Though I reckoned that was on account of the fact that these things were built. They were designed. Looking back, I wonder if those sounds actually were what they sounded like: a frequency of some sort. A radio signal or something to the others, asking for help or telling them dinner was coming.

After a few tumbles end over end, I finally managed to break its grasp on me, and used to moment to quickly regain my footing. My gown was covered in wet sand and spider fiber and already ruined beyond repair. I sulked, frowning up to the clouds by way of apology until I had the time to say the words out loud to Ms. Salcedo later.

Before it could latch back on or do something worse, I tried to knock it free of its footing just as it seemed to regain it.

Giant creatures she thought her friends and it was instinct to react in fear, to slash out at the spiders. That's what Francine keeps telling herself anyway, hacking away at one of their legs until it snaps in two and the creature shrieks.

(sorry for the screaming… i feel tied to them in some way. when you hurt them i feel it.)

Francine just shrieks back - louder, scarier, bigger, badder. Her ghosts whisper, harrowed and frightened, contradicting each-other like the tug of reason in her chest. They're scared of her, these creatures, scared of all of them. It's why they attack. Francine understands that, empathetic little girl - but they scare her too. A chill runs down her spine as one rips through Adan's hand, his voice a screech. Fear. Francine knows that sound all too well. And then it's just instinct, leaping over Autumn's tumbling body as she wrestles with one of the creatures and slams her weapon down on the one that had Adan's hand in its jaws.

A gargled, indecipherable command croaks through the air from her chest, the rest in steel and the intention to stop

But it gets to her fast, red-hot across her forehead. Before she can land a good hit there's blood in Francine's eyes and she's stumbling backwards, blinded, and falling to the grassy floor below.

Adan is a mess of panic; they all are, in their own ways. The blood pumping out of his hand makes a mess of the sand around them, ugly red trails in his wake. Macromantulas follow them like guide routes, skittering along red lines right to the kids back. It makes something click in Chanel's jaw, her mouth a rigid line, but her pack dwindles and skitters around crookedly. Adan smashes apart limbs and Autumn, as scared as she is, trie to use her blade to knock one off balance and it works.

Francine is bleeding and she's never looked so small to Chanel. Her tinkling laughter during her PTS had made her larger than life, a girl turned shadow, more echo than body. She'd filled the whole room. 

Looking at her now, katana too big in her grasp, Chanel can see exactly the ways in which she is still a child, in need of a helping hand. Steele comes in swinging, gouging one of the creatures eyes out, and the rest of the pack starts to stumble along with it. Pack tactics, they succeed and fail as a team. Chanel lets out a whooping grin, a half laugh almost escaping as she hopes they kill them soon. Get out of there, she thinks.
