I gestured to the gown, which was now a soaking, tattered mess of sand and spider fiber and blood. I know I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about getting it, but I'd only just put it on. Now, I had to make a whole show of walking behind one of the huge stones and changing back into my old clothes. I still wasn't a fan of the rusty brown color, but the fabric was much softer and warm, and it did a fair job of absorbing the dampness of the rain that'd seeped through the dress in the first place without staying wet long after.

I'd purposefully not addressed the fact that it was me who'd eventually killed the brood mother and sent the babies scurrying back to whatever hole they'd crawled out of, but I was beaming inside. I could've just as easily ended up dead: ripped limb from limb, or spun up in silk webbing and dissolved and swallowed. I could've let my fears overtake me, been the damsel the world had already decided I must be. I didn't. I lived. There was a story that could be told of my time in here. So now, even if I didn't make it all the way to the end, no one could say I was nothing special.

I watched the streams of rainwater drip off the edge of my umbrella as we walked, and walked, and walked: further away from the place were giant spiders hated the wet and cold as much as I did.

"Where to next?"

Francine throws the question away with a shudder. The ground had knocked the wind out of her lungs on impact and she'd half-thought her time was up. Ghosts so close, almost touching, but not quite. Never quite.

Now they hover at a distance, unsure how to react to a not-quite-dead-yet girl bandaging her head and stabbing herself in the arm with a needle. Those spiders contained something that had made her head spin, dry heaving at the base of the cornucopia as the smaller ones had scattered, the big one dead at the girls hands. Adan's own was mangled beyond repair. Francine wiped at the blood in her eyes and was shocked to see his arm still dripping crimson - she'd hurried over, cooing with concern.

"I fix," she had muttered, desperate hands gathering whatever she could find to stop the bleeding. "I fix!"

Handles on a snowball, Autumn finally asks a question Francine understands as she ties a knot in the last of her makeshift bandages. It's obvious that they can't stay here forever. Francine's cheeks burn with thirst and her heart longs to explore, hunting ghosts.

Two canons. Two ghosts - she is jealous of them, but also, not.

How strange.

"There," she declares, pointing toward east. It's different to the ones from home, green mountains replaced with a pink haze, but Francine knows a forest when she sees one. Desperate she is to explore, but even more desperate still is her thirst.

"Or there," a nod toward the stream, tipping her empty bottle over and shaking to no avail. "Drink. Soon."

Please, she should add at the end of her sentence - but she doesn't want to seem desperate.

Just like that, Francine breaks through the overwhelming panic wrought by bitter agony. Little more than flickering light and feeble flame but somehow warmer than whatever those monsters had sunk into his veins. It's brutal hope, panicked hands wrapping what is left of his in makeshift bandages.

There's not enough bravery in Adan to fashion another face to wear - his terror is written plainly across his features. "I fix." it's not quite a promise, Adan thinks, but it's enough to stop his pulse from roaring in his ears and he finds he can suck in deep breaths again. The world sinks into uneven focus, brighter and blurrier than it should be thanks to the tears stagnating in his eyes.

"It got you too." Selfish concern, because Adan has simply accepted the fact that he cannot exist without her. She would leave his night terrors horribly lonely. Bubbleboy shares his sentiment, Francine's hair moving as the seelie settles on her shoulder. "You've gotta be okay first." He mumbles, mouth gone clumsy from adrenaline. He's not sure if the words are honest, or if he's only saying what she wants to hear.

He bleeds with every heartbeat.

Death looms, hot breaths puffing against the back of his neck.

Don't look.

"I think we-" His voice is wrecked, just one more pathetic thing. He cradles his hand to his stomach, "should go - to - the mountain." Ascend, far above the graves today had begun to dig for them. "Or just away. From here. It's ruined."

He raises his head high enough to glare at one of the dead spiders, spitting a wad of blood at it's body. "That was for your dress."

He can't quite manage to grin at Autumn.
