niko
Hope's face lights up the sky. At the top of the world, it felt as if she was staring directly at the boy from five, right out of the afterlife and through the hologram. There were two others, six and one, but Dory's face hurt the most. He didn't know the girl from eight all too well, but they had shared a night of aimless drinking on the training center roof. She was a decent human being, and she didn't deserve to die to some unknown horror. Niko tried to stop images of the girl being bitten by spider monsters or Ivy or being sliced into pieces by Mirage's sword, but it didn't work.
His night of rest on the peak was fitful and meager. After hoping that being so far from the other tributes would help him sleep better, the spider monster's laugh screeched in his ears each time he came close to dozing off. Each day came with another horror to haunt his nights.
In the morning, he decided that making his way to the ruined structures he saw from the peak would be the best way to hunt down some food and maybe another drink of water. The top of the mountain was beautiful, but there were not many resources he could use to survive and he didn't want to try eating the day-old dragonfly carcasses.
The seelie was awake, of course. It never seemed to truly sleep. It just seemed to lay still for a few hours and then jolt back to life at a moment's notice. "Ready to keep moving?" he says to his companion with a parched voice. Bean glows in approval.
He begins his trek back down the light bridge and to solid ground. It felt good to be back on a surface not suspended thousands of feet in the air.
Heading towards the fields of glowing flowers he had spotted on his way up the mountain, the wind slices across his body every few minutes. At least the sun was finally uncovered from clouds and the storm had ceased its relentless calls for blood.
He started to hope that today would be slightly less bloody than the last four and that the gamemakers were willing to give them respite. His hopes were brutally dashed into cliff at the site of the tributes.
Shit.
His head turns back and forth between the two groups ascending the mountain from different paths. There's nowhere he could hide now, and he curses himself for losing focus.
He does a quick assessment. Two alliances. Five tributes. And Niko.
The math does not seem to be looking too good for him. If only Ivy could have survived a few days longer, there could have been someone at his back.
He wants to negotiate, to barter for his life like he had tried with Itzal and Mirage, but he knows that would land him a hundred feet deep in the ground. No, he had already apologized to himself for what he needs to do, what Itzal had showed him he needed to do.
Drawing his blade, he must look like a malnourished guardian of the peak.
"S-st" he begins to stutter out through chapped lips and a voice broken by the monsters of the days prior.
No, be strong. They won't take him seriously unless he's strong.
"Stay back," he says, his voice taking on more of an edge.
We want to, Mirage had said to him. It had sent a chill down his spine just a few days prior. The heartless malice in her words had frozen him in place. He knows he needs to do the same.
"I've been told kids shouldn't play with deadly weapons," he continues, taking a firm stance as the two groups begin to notice each other around a bend in the winding paths.
"I'd hate to see what six sleep-deprived kids would do with a shit ton of deadly weapons if you keep coming up this way."
But no, they keep moving forwards.
"Who said it's deep? I'm just trying to kill someone. That's pretty simple, isn't it?" The memory of Mirage's voice rings in his ears and his knuckles turn white on the hilt of his sword.
It's not deep, he tries to remind himself. Nausea begins to shake through his body as he tries to take the advice of someone he despises.
It's simple, just swing.
