Extraordinarily ordinary.

That’s what most would say about her if you were to ask. There were even two other girl’s her age with the name Greer.

She was nothing special.

And probably never would be.

The Halstead’s were your typical family from District Four. Not particularly rich, but not poor either. Their house was nicer than most on their block, but much smaller than the mansions a few streets over. During peak fishing season, their store front flourished. During off season, they struggled to get by. They lived, they fished, they died. That was until they didn’t.

The war took her brother, and by extension her mother.

Her mother, Margot, too sweet and kind for this world. A woman who was known for her beautiful smile and ability to woo customers. A woman how was none by everyone and forgotten by none. A woman who was known as the fisherman’s wife who had a quiet little girl with big green eyes and dark hair that followed her around the shop, clinging to her leg. So quiet, some feared she was mute. But Greer was just a girl with many thoughts, but few words to speak.

Until she had no choice.

Aedon said he would come back, not to worry. He said it was for the good of District Four, to make our lives either. Then the day came when the soliders knocked on our door with the news every family fears.

It didn’t take long for Mother to go after that.

There wasn’t much Greer could do. Father fished, she ran the store. Somehow after all those years watching in silence she picked up on her mother’s way of smooth talking and contagious smiles. They kept their heads above water somehow.

But some days, she still felt like she was drowning.

Things were finally looking up until they came back down almost crushing both her and her father. The Hunger Games is what they called them. A fight to the death, only one would come out. Alive.

But Greer knew they had to be dead inside.

At first, he was convinced it was just once. But then they called names again, and again, and again. He figured they would never go away, and he couldn’t bear to lose the only piece of him he had left.

So, he put a spear in her one hand and a knife in the other.

He refused to let his only daughter go down without a fight, and each night, he made her promise him one thing.

Try.

She was not allowed to give up. She was not allowed to put down her weapon and cry. She had to promise to bring herself back to him. Other’s thought he was crazy for teaching a young girl how to wield a weapon, especially ones that were made for catching fish and fileting them. Even Greer herself thought he was out of his mind, but she did as she was asked.

Because he was all she had left too.

Seven Games gone, only one left until she was free. But they should know by now, the Halstead family can never seem to get away from misfortune.

Her name written on a tiny piece of paper, Peacekeeper arms locked around hers. She has just enough time to toss her head around and lock eyes with her father.

The tears stream silently down his cheeks.

But she refuses to cry.
