Gideon Thatcher | District Six | FIN

It shouldn’t be something I am proud of, the dirt that my younger brother George is rubbing in my face. I like to remind him that every other dumbass in this District is named some variation of George, I have not met another Gideon. So, who is the special one now then?

Dad is really shitting his pants though, just two heirs to his share of the Thatcher empire. One is a dumbass and the other so sickly, I keep teasing him every birthday that it might be his last. Poor mother has shackled the gates so it is unlikely he will ever get another.

Okay so I suck at chemistry, the odd black sheep in the family who cannot recite that periodic table. I come with my uses though, I get to save a few guinea pigs as my cousins and uncles test their next big drug on me. I don’t have to sign any insurance waiver, unlike all the other trial test subjects and hey. One time I trialled a sleeping drug, I got paid to sleep for entire week! All while there are other suckers working fifteen-hour night shifts in the hospitals, craving for the sweet tender comfort of their pillows.

So, my family is not the most loved in the District, our name is on most of the pharmaceutical warehouses. A little empire built by my greatxIHaveNoIdeaHowManyNumbers Grandpa Melvin, carried on by his three sons. My direct descendant is Gerard, married some girl called Brianna and had lots of kids who also had lots of kids and then eventually the genes fucked up somewhere and hello, I came into the world.

I can’t complain about it all though, there is a nice inheritance to look forwards too.
