Mental health was an epidemic that not many of the first generation was willing to discuss. Our wellbeing was crucial to our faith as the decline of our welfare could have negative impact on our faith. My mother often elaborated on her so-called dark days as she took on the burdens of the commune but never had someone to console her when she needed it the most. My father convinced that prayer was enough to rid any inner demons refusing to discuss that there were other methods of divine intervention able to aid those of ill-being.
I knew in my darkest moments, the moments of impure thoughts regarding my relationship with Tanner, the moments of loneliness there was nothing Ripred’s blessed creations could not shine a light on. Being out there in the wilderness, dirt on my feet and the company of the animals always put a smile on my face. It reminded me of my purpose in life, all of the good I was doing to make sure we could ensure no one lost sight of the beauty of life and salvation.
There was no way to properly be able to escort every member into the wild to retreat in the fundamentals of the world, but I knew there was a way we could bring a little bit of that to our home. On one of my errands runs into the district heart to purchase a few necessities from local vendors still kind enough to do sell us their products, I came in contact with a farming family. The showed me their little bundle of furry joys. Baby Vicugna Pacos* with fur white as the pearly gates of heaven. My heart automatically knew that they were exactly what we needed to provide some natural medicine to lift up everyone’s moral.
After a few heated debates with my father and his equals, I found my way along the dirt path of our residence onwards to the stables. There I would meet up with our stable girl to welcome the animals into our home and hearts. Someone who shared my affection for the creatures sharing our land, someone who understood that we were all one and the same in the eyes of the lord.
It was a nice day outside, with the not a cloud insight. A true sign from above that this was the right decision and the Gods approved of our intentions. Sister Howard was hard at work when I arrived at the stables, it was obvious to anyone who even observed for a second. She loved those animals as if they were her own and understood them like no one else. I had nothing but admiration for the work she has done and her abilities.
I knocked twice on the wooded gates of the stables to garner her attention. Waiting patiently as the sunlight from above reflected in my hazel nut-brown eyes. An excited smile complimented the enthusiastic tone of my voice ”Hello Sister Howard. Are you ready to set off?” I did not want to rush her as I knew she had other responsibilities whilst I was completely able to clear my schedule with my mother taking over anything that needed to be done today. ”We have some baby alpacas to welcome home.”
*Vicugna Pacos = scientific term for alpacas (according to google)
