LARISSA
LEROUX
"Ever heard of a twitch-up?"
Call me a fucking saint, she thought, kneeling down next to the young boy from Seven. There was literally no universe in which Larissa helping the other tributes be better survivors was actually good for her. Even if it meant a moment's hesitation when he had her in his crosshairs, eventually, the arrow would still be fired. Even if she somehow avoided the kid until last. He'd want to live too. They all did.
"It's simple, just cut a notch here," she said, her hands guiding his toward a stick that was half-buried in the sand, "and then attach this piece to something springy, like a sapling or a tree branch, and cut the end so that it fits into the notch." She recognized that she was perhaps blowing through the steps a bit too quickly, but she'd heard them thousands of times. This was even one of the things she covered with the group of seven year olds she taught for extra credit last summer. But the kid seemed to be taking it all in well enough. She decided to call it impressive, then, and continue at the pace she was already going in: assembling the pieces and then grabbing for the wire loop she'd already fashioned.
"Once the piece fits, wrap the noose around it like this. Make sure it's secure or this is all pointless." She made sure to leave it as hairpin as possible, the notch hanging on securely, but barely. "Prey will come through, get stuck, try to run, and-" she placed her hand into the snare for demonstration and the wire snapped loose, closing around her wrist and hauling it into the air.
"Don't forget the bait when you're out there, though. Nothing dies for free in this world."
