Vallen Watkins"There's going to come a day you regret not spending it with us. It might not be now, it might not be in the near future, but one day you're going to regret it."
The words echo through his mind over and over. It doesn't help that he's taken time away from the hustle and bustle of the training center and dining room to spend some time alone on top of the roof where the only sound is the cheers of the citizens below. But now, they aren't even there. It's just him locked away with his thoughts. Nothing else exists, and maybe this is why it makes his mothers words so clear and stuck at the front of his mind. For a moment, when they were said, Vallen had no clue what his mother was talking about, but now that he's here, he wishes he could go back and undo all the mistakes he's made. Throughout his life, he's spent so much time sitting behind closed doors making some robots for competitions that he ignored his own family. Sometimes for meals he'd sit at the dinner table, but it ended quickly after rapidly scarfing down his food. They tried to tell him, his parents, that one day he'd wish he could turn back time, and he swore it would never come, but now he's swallowing his words wishing they weren't true.
Even now, as he's stuck in a prison waiting for the games to begin, he doesn't even have the tools necessary to create a tiny robot to keep him company.
Will they ever forgive me?
Being lost in thoughts is always worse than having someone to share them with, and the stars don't even twinkle when he makes eye contact with them. Why would they? They can't even see him, and even if they could, he's just a lost soul traveling through the world for a microsecond before his life is gone completely. Life is so important on earth, yet so meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Humankind is just a spec of dust simply passing through while ruining the world for all other creatures. Maybe that's why death comes so quickly before anyone really has a chance to experience everything life has to offer. Nothing will ever make it easy. Even then, his life is being tossed away, and nobody in the world even cares expect his family. Everyone else must have some friends rooting for them while he has none.
Robots are electronics, and at the end of the day, they won't even know he's gone.
You're right, mom, and I'm sorry, but I know it's not good enough.
A heavy sigh leaves his chest as he leans agains the wall. Freedom is exciting, yet it comes with hope that only destroys everyone who tries to hold onto it.
