Twenty-three people.
Twenty-three other children she was meant to kill.
And twenty-three others who wanted to kill her.
This wasn’t the place to make friends or lovers. It wasn’t a place to learn to care about others. It was the only real advantage that Leonora had. She wasn’t particularly well liked in Nine, not even by her family. It used to tear her apart, but sooner or later she learned not to care. So, the looks she received from the Careers and other tributes slid right off her back.
It didn’t affect her.
At least, that’s what she told herself.
Somehow though, she managed to find…people. That’s the only way she planned to refer to them. Friends weren’t allowed here, not when they all had to die. But for some reason, she decided she could trust these people with her life.
For the time being at least.
That didn’t mean she could relax the rest of the time of the time they had in the training center. There was still plenty to learn, plenty of time to sharpen her skills (and her knives). And there was still plenty of time to learn all that she could about the rest of the playing field. Even the ones who didn’t see like threats, Leo was sure to keep tabs.
There was bright blond hair at the rope station. So bright, that she was sure no one within 5 miles would be able to miss it. Larissa Le Roux. Leonora was fresh meat, but she still managed enough courage to approach her regardless.
”Le Roux, right?” she paused, taking a moment to watch the girl continue tying her intricate knots. ”What’s it like? Knowing that everyone but Ridley hasn’t survived…and here you are?” She was poking the bear, but she knew it would get her attention.
”Are knots really going to help you make it out alive?”
What was that old saying?
Keep yourfriendspeople close but keep your enemies closer.
