The girl from seven died and Elise ran like the coward she was. Tail between her legs, her unavoidable death would have to come another day.
Now I found myself once again allured by the sweet scent of no good, drip dripping from the fruitful trees surrounding us. They sang promises of sweet flesh and ripe cores, for a girl who has not eaten in days, there was not a more ideal paradise. Their colors as bright as the sun shining down on us, blinding any of the warning signs that were going off in my head. I knew I needed to have one. Just one would do the trick.”Way up high in the apple tree
Two red apples smiled at me”
I gently sang the words of an old nursery rhyme engrained in my brain since I was as kid. One of those rhymes found in children’s books, something mother would read to us as infants hoping we would eat our fruit.”I shook that tree as hard as I could
Dooowwwwn came an apple”
I plucked the lowest hanging fruit from a glistening red apple tree and brought the ripe fruit to my own cherry lips. My hand-crafted gold and diamond teeth crunched down on the fruit; a satisfying sound close to the ones the girl from seven’s leg made. The first taste sweet as the tree’s misleading promise because it was soon replaced an indescribable rotten taste. Death and destruction itself danced along my tongue and overtook my body. I wanted nothing more than to spit the fruit out, but something compelled me to accept the decaying taste and proceed to eat the apple in its entirety.”Mmmm, it was good”
The last line of the old rhyme quietly escaped my lips as all of a sudden the world once again seemed to make sense.***
My smile widened as true joy escaped the prison that was sobriety.
The once green leaves that populated the once still branches shifted their colors in an endless loop, never staying still, always changing. A single linear reality no longer existed but all the parallels melted together existing at once.greenbluepurpleyellow
My mind was once again opened to all the possibilities of what if and what could have beens. What if Will would have stayed? What if I fought a little harder a little earlier? What if I cared enough about a dying girls wishes to put her out of her misery? What if I never disguised my selfishness for selflessness? What ifs and what could have beens are all fun and games until you seriously consider the answers.
I violently shook my head attempting to get rid of the termite infestation in my brain. The little voices humming all the questions I never have to want to answer. That is when the letters started falling out of right ear, then left, then my nostrils until I was vomiting up an alphabet soup. Each letter echoing in my voice, a million different versions of my voice physically visible. A symphony of my favorite sound taking over the orchids. There was no escaping own voice, It became part of the trees for all eternity.
My body became weightless with the purge of all my thoughts, planting them as seeds in the ground. I lifted my arms up fully expecting to see that I produced wings and would be able to fly away from this hellhole. This could have all been a bad trip in the first place, and I would soon wake up in my bed in one. Instead of feathery wings, my skin glowed and reflected in the sun. A wave of shine and shimmer rolled over my arms when they twisted and turned. A ripple effect on my very own body mimicking the shifting of colors on the tree.
I took a step backwards towards where the rest of my allies were, the ground felt like walking in the clouds, or marshmallows. Walking on marshmallows seemed more likely. My body and legs sunk into the ground that sent me tumbling down the small hill I once was on. As I rolled, it felt as if I was thrown in every which direction, inside out and upside down, round, and round I went.
When my body came to a halt, I sat myself upside down and threw my head frontwards raging with laughter that manifested in a bright pink comedic speech bubble bursting from my unhinged jaw.HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I noticed that another one of the apples have found its way into the palm of my hands. Maybe I would save it for later, or maybe one of my allies would come join me in our very own wonderland. I held it out for either of them to take, ”My dears, you really need to try this, I promise it won’t disappoint”
