Flynn Garner
”You skipped a year Flynn!” Dale’s father complains behind the counter, tapping the empty space on the wall where all of their photos are pinned. ”Yeah sorry about that, long story…”. The chef just shakes his head at me, flinging his kitchen towel over his shoulder as he heads back to the grills. It is true, the last victor I brought here was Andal. I should bring him back.
Just as I was about to leave the Capitol, someone in the crowd said you are not so special anymore! Young victors used to be anomalies, then I came, then Storm and now Torian. There will still be a lot of hype for District Seven’s newest victor, poor kid. Great for Mackenzie I suppose he was there when I woke up in the hospital bed, Teddy by his side. Now he got to wake up one of his own. It is not right to doubt tributes, the stats were stacked against me, but they were really in the red for Caspian and Quentin. Another pair of families that I have had to pay my condolences too. That is fourteen now, including my own.
I hope Mackenzie has prepared Torian for reality of that. Another kid on an never-ending victory tour.
The kitchen is fired up, patties squashed onto the grills and that is my cue to wait for Torian by the entrance. It is a pleasure to help the Dixons, with all that Dale and his family have done for me over the years. Now they have their own ’permanent’ place on the victory tour agenda. I let them down last year. I let a lot of people down. It is going to take a long time to repay all of them.
”Hey Torian!” I call out to the kid, holding the door open for him. The kid – he really does look young; I am getting old. ”I hope you are hungry.” I lead him further into the quiet diner, reserved for an hour for the District’s special guest. ”I know it is nothing like you would expect in Six but it is a good break from all the university and hospital tours.” Same old speech. Same old seat the on the barstool where we can watch Dale’s dad prepare the food. ”There is a menu up top there,” I point at the newly renovated bright, rather cheesy burger graphics that are hanging from the ceiling ”But you can have anything you want. There are meat free options too, or just a milkshake or something if you’re not feeling too much. Someone once mixed milkshake and fries in here, not sure I’ll try that again but you can…”
I beckon to my usual order on the menu for Dale’s dad to prepare then get onto preparing the probing conversation with Torian. ”Just take this as a chance to just breathe for a moment. Halfway through your tour. How is it going? Is Mackenzie helping?”
