marcus is lucky to have secured a more private room for viewing the games. this was his first year as a mentor, and still, to this day, he thought of it as a weird experience. he isnt sitting too far from terra, who seems to be watching the television just as closely as marcus is. from what they were told, it seems like a normal hunger games set up. they are only given so much insider information, at least, that is what marcus to tell as he tried to have many of his questions answered.
most of them were chided and put on the back burner, which told him that they did not even want victors to know what the game makers were thinking. keep them in the shadows just enough. he wondered if that would change in the future, but for now, marcus did not test the waters. he had just survived the ordeal himself.
he just wanted to make sure that his tributes would have the best odds of winning.
he took a deep breath as he watched all of the tributes enter the arena is what looked like different sections. this sort of reminded him of his games, and from what he could understand, also like terra's. the crowd is even rowdy from the television screen, but as the tributes move towards the weapons and a voice comes up announcing the beginning of the games, marcus is watching just intently enough, waiting to see what is going to happen to hutch and sarena.
and then moments later, water begins flooding the arena. marcus is stunned watching this, wondering what in the world broke for this much water to be blowing through the arena like this. the commentators are just as baffled as they are watching tributes trying to wade through it like nothing is happen. faces start appearing on the screen, going from colorful expressions to greyed out solemness. marcus is not paying attention to the first couple until he notices one for ten.
sarena.
marcus is somewhat gutted, thinking that this could have been avoided on the gamemakers part. this just seemed careless to subject tributes too. he thought that in moments the water would stop and then they could scrap the rest of this mistake and send all the tributes home.
but it didnt stop. water kept filling the arena. the cameras are focusing on tributes, but not long enough for anyone's comfort. every breath marcus took seemed like another tribute had fallen. he did not see hutch's picture pop up, so there might be a chance for him to survive all of this.
marcus also knew that swimming was not something taught in ten. most of the boys did not spend time near the water, most of them being too far from it.
more faces pan the screen and marcus can only look at terra in horror as they see more and more fall in front of their eyes. thats when marcus realizes that they are not going to do anything about the water. at this point, there would only be a handful of tributes left by the time they stopped the water and reset everything.
this was the ninth hunger games.
he grabbed a pillow behind him and hugged it in between his arms and chest. the stress of this was starting to put him off. the girl from one appears on the screen, greyed out and marcus realizes that there is only eleven tributes left.
and then hutch appears on the screen not too long after. he is horrified, thinking that this is not right. he deserved more. sarena and him both did. "turn it off." marcus said sternly.
they do not do so.
marcus stood up, grabbing a remote on the nearby table and chucking it at the TV. "i said turn it fucking off." marcus is heated, the unfairness is causing his blood to boil. "now...". the remote is blocked by a peacekeepers gun and they move to restrain marcus to the couch. "no. watch." one of the peacekeepers said as there is a hand placed on each of his shoulders. he doesnt dare move, knowing well that they are still not treating victors like winners.
they dont trust them just like the victors dont trust them.
more faces appear on the screen, 1, 2, 3, 5.
they all fall one by one.
and marcus is mortified.
