"Jill! Jill!" I could barely hear Michael's voice; all I could hear was his name. Jimmy Garner. Jimmy Garner. Jimmy Garner. There must have been a mistake because there was no way on this mother fucking earth that my brother was going to be taken away from me without so much as a please and thank you. "Jill! Jill, are you listening to me?"
"Oh my god, Michael! I am not listening to you for Ripred's sake!" I pull my arm from his grip, my voice dripping with venom as I lash out at the only other person who might love him nearly as much as me. "Just—just give me some space. I need to talk to someone—anyone. I need to find Mum. Mum can surely pay them off, right? Dad can throw some hundred-dollar bills in their face, and they can simply replace Jimmy with—with fucking Alex Farlett! No one likes that two-faced cheating whore!" Michael reaches out for my arm again, but I move out of his reach, putting distance between us. "If you want to be helpful, Michael, find my mother!"
The crowd parts as I march through, relieved onlookers staring at me with pity in their eyes. Each time I meet one of their gazes, they give me a sympathetic smile that I want to slap off their faces. He wasn't even dead, and yet they look at me as though he had died the minute he walked onto that stage. "I swear to Ripred if anyone delivers some sort of fucking sympathy casserole to my door, I will shove it down your throat!" I growl into the crowd, climbing the stairs at the front of the Justice Building.
"Jimmy Garner," I demand of the peacekeeper standing by the door. He opens the door and points me towards the door on the right.
Pushing past him, I rip open the door. I barely give him a chance to register what is happening before I wrap my arms around him. "We—I can fix this. I got Michael looking for Mum and Dad; they will bribe some of the peacekeepers. It's the least they can do. I—I can fix this." It was a lie. We both knew it, after all I had never heard of a tribute suddenly being swapped out for another, no matter how much a wished it could be true.
