"I just want to go home..." were the last words that slipped from my lips as sleep dragged me into its depths. Flynn had been lying on the bed beside me, the smell of his latest bad habit searing into my nostrils. I had wanted to tell him that he smelled like crap, but I found that words were no longer reachable as I slipped deeper and deeper into slumber.
Suddenly, a jolt of electricity surged through me, and my eyes flew open. It took me a moment to gather my bearings. I was still in my room, darkness shrouding me. "Flynn?" I whispered, my voice croaking slightly as I tried to shake off the last remnants of sleep. "Flynn?!" I reached out to the bed beside me to find myself alone.
Another jolt of electricity coursed through me as I registered the sound of a countdown, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6... I frowned as I rolled out of bed; the floor felt like ice against the bare soles of my feet. The countdown reached 1, and the TV in my room suddenly burst to life, temporarily blinding me as my eyes adjusted to the sudden light.
"In order to remind the Districts that our fragile peace can be broken at any moment, without warning, the 95th Hunger Games will begin... now."
Wait, what? What did they mean the games start now? We had two more days... We were still in the training center... Jimmy was still in the room next to me - Jimmy! Bolting from my room, I banged on his door loudly before ripping it open. "Jimmy!" His room was as dark as mine, except for the light of the TV.
I stared at him for a moment, "Did you just see the message? The games - they start now? That's ridiculous though, right?" It had to be some cruel joke the Gamemakers had decided to pull before the games really began. A scare tactic. That had to be it.
"Where's Flynn? He will know the answer." I moved to leave the room when only to pause as the intercom crackled with static and a voice boomed into the room.
"Hey, besties! Head down to the Training Room, we're going to play some fun games for fabulous prizes!"
"It's 3 am in the morning!" I groaned, confused about what the hell was happening. "We should be SLEEPING, not playing GAMES-"
"That wasn't a request."
I looked to Jimmy, waiting for Flynn to run into the room and demand us to head to the training room because when the Gamemakers asked you to do something, you just did it. But instead of seeing Flynn, a laser beam fired into the room followed by the blast of a cannon that sounded all too similar to the cannons used during the games. My heart raced, the smell of burnt material filling the room.
"The 95th games begin now," the message had said.
Oh my God.
I was so screwed.
"Jimmy, let's go."
