"And our training tournament champion goes down! No hesitating now, people. We're playing for real."
He beat her. Somehow, he bested the girl who won the combat tournament. He kept his gaze fixed forward, his chest rising and falling with shallow breath. He hoped it meant good thing for sponsorship- or was that even a thing now that the Games were taking place so far ahead of schedule?
Another gunshot could be heard nearby and he hoped it wasn't toward anyone he cared about, stepping off the stage to let the fighting continue and daring not to look toward the exits for fear of what he might see.
By the time it was his turn again, Jack had managed to completely level his pulse again and heard Emerson shouting cheers for him a couple of times, so he knew he was fine. Mac had already lost his fight, which was a bummer, but it at least confirmed his whereabouts. Laney's too, though her fight had been particularly rough. Wolf, though, was still nowhere to be seen when Jack found the courage to search, and he hadn't seen Arcadia since she left to get some more sleep before the fights.
He stepped onto the stage while they announced his opponent, Jimmy. Jimmy Garner. He sighed. They were really setting him up for failure here. Tournament champions and namesake tributes- did Jack really want to be known as the guy who beat every potential early-games favorite right off the bat? On the contrary, he supposed he could handle being labeled the villain of season 95, so long as it ensured his survival and it didn't change how the ones he trusted saw him. Plus, if he was going to potentially lose sponsors anyway...
"Don't think we've met yet," he said, voice full of earnest charm, "I've met Nessa, though. Talked about our mutual love of cats!" Behind him, the trainers stepped onto the stage unfurling a pair of whips. They handed one to Jimmy, and slid the other into Jack's hands. He considered quitting, and then he looked up at the flickering silhouettes of the gamemakers. He couldn't, could he? Not really.
"Sorry if I get ya in the face. I only make contact with the lions when they are being real shits. Usually the threat is enough."
He was talking too much. He was going to shut up now.
