The district nine suite had changed in the time that you were down in the training area. You quickly hurried past what felt like endless rows of beds in a military maze. The floors reflecting the florescent lights back at you in an eerie manor. The overwhelming haunted sensation leaked into your mind allowing it to play tricks on you. Shadows that were not there and a silence that screamed louder than anything you have ever heard.
Your footsteps echo out of place against the almost to clean floors letting anyone else who would be in your living quarters know that you were back. You did not care, there was one thing that you had came for and it was all your mind could think off. Your mom’s locket. The one keepsake that helped you hold onto what you were fighting for, and you needed it now more than ever. You could already feel yourself slipping, you strive for perfection taking charge as your gears started to turn and you saw the games as your latest attempt to make something out of yourself.
This was not for you; this was for mom and Icarus. It was for their own good. At least that is what you keep telling yourself.
You push open the door to what was your room before they took a place that had some sense of safety and then tore it all to shreds. There was not a second since you heard that first cannon go off that you were not looking over your shoulder making sure that there was not another person standing there ready to stab you in the back. You needed to have everything under control at all times and it felt like you were just drowning in a pool of chaos.
Your hands slip under the fluffed-up pillow that was so perfectly places at the center of the bed searching for the locket, thankfully they did not seem to have touched your one personal item. Carefully you place it around your neck and fiddle with the heart shaped jewelry for a moment trying to remember your mother’s embrace on one of her good days. You allow yourself that split second of peace before leaving the room again to find yourself in the once more in the maze of bunkbeds.
From the corner of one of the top bunks an ever so slight reflection, different from the ones radiating throughout the rest of the room catches your eye. There had to be a reason they put the bunk beds here, there was no way they intended any of the tributes to actually sleep in them. You searched for a reason to the game makers rhyme but there was no point in trying to decode their minds. You did not want to be able to understand their reasoning, for what would that make you then?
You attempted to hoist yourself up to the top bunk but the pain from the wound on your chest made it feel impossible. The sensation of being stabbed all over again was too much to ignore.
Unknown footsteps start to echo throughout the barracks as you turn around to see Roe standing behind another set of bunks. If you could get him to hoist you up then maybe you would be able to get whatever it was glistening in the artificial light. He was not your first choice or even really your second for an helping hand but he seemed like the only option at the moment.
”So are you just going to stand there, sweetheart?” You call out to him in a slightly annoyed tone. You would not put it past the boy from twelve to find your current state amusing. ”C’mon lift me up, there is something up there. I’ll grab something for you aswell.”
