Stupid fucking name, for the record. Matches his stupid fucking face. Of course he would get off on fucking with sixteen year old girls. Super, duper ick.

I keep looking back over my shoulder as I run away after hauling myself through the air-conditioning vents, paranoid there’ll be more of his lasers pointed at my retreating body. But it seems I’ve managed to escape the perimeter of Geiger’s twisted little game, for now at least. My whole body aches in a way I’ve never experienced before. This wasn’t the usual pain that came with training back home. This was a combination of advanced Capitol firearm technology and mental fatigue from knowing you’re facing an enemy you can’t outrun or hide from.

The further I walk, the quieter everything gets. The growing silence unnerves me - reminds me how much I hate being on my own. I regret not being more persistent in taking Wolf with me, if only to have someone better at navigating the halls around. Strength in numbers, or something like that.

That is, until I turn the corner and almost slam straight into Tigs’ panting body.

“Holy shit!” I practically fly into her arms, giving her the biggest bear hug. It is SO good to see her. Though honestly, it could have been anyone standing in front of me and I’d probably have reacted the same. But she doesn’t need to know that!

“Girl, I am shattered. This is the biggest joke.” I involuntarily yawn, reminded of just how early it is, and I almost cry at the thought of the beauty sleep I’m missing out on. My next stop was definitely going to be my bed.

“Did you finish your fight? Are you hurt? We gotta find bandages or something, I have literal burn marks on my body, ugh!” I grab her hand and drag her along towards the medical wing.

All the training in the world could not have prepared you for the real thing. Nothing could have informed you just what you were getting yourself into. Standing in front of a career like Siberite was more than just daunting, it was frightening. It did not matter in that instant that you could be more resourceful than him or more cunning. The fight was a fight of sheer brute and every fight from this point on would be as well. You made it further than you had thought in the tournament, maybe there was more of a fighter in you than you wanted to believe.

When the gamemakers were done playing with their toys, you ran as fast as you could from the training room, your entire body still shaking with adreniline, blood dripping from your chest soaking up your clothes. All of your senses were heightened which made it all that more hard to focus on the task at hand; finding anyone that you could trust. Of course your first instinct was your district partner, the familiar face by your side since day one but alas Irene was nowhere to be found. Your skinny bare legs kept moving through the training centre trying not to focus on the pain or the blinding lights reflecting across the steel floors and empty walls.

Just keep moving.

That was the plan until you were tackled with a bear hug from the blond chatter mouth from one. If it were not for her more than excited tone of voice, you would think she was trying to kill you by crushing your tiny body with affection, and lets be honest she was probably more than capable of doing so.

”Arcadia, you’re hurting me…”you groaned as you gave up trying to free yourself. ”I’m fine” you always were fine. ”Just a few scratches and bruises, nothing we can’t fix”” you try to smile through the pain you were feeling, downplaying the stab wound on your chest. ”We’ll patch up your burn as well when we get to the med wing” you remarked. There was nothing more than a good task to keep your mind occupied from the discomfort you were experiencing.

In retrospect, squeezing a girl who’s just gone three rounds of fighting for her life probably wasn’t the smartest thing I could have done. I let myself feel bad for a few fleeting seconds before I’m launching back into overdrive, dragging the two girls by their hands down the corridor with me. “What a boring idea for an Arena! But I don’t know what more I would have expected from those Gamemakers. They don’t seem like they’ve had an original thought before in their lives!”

One advantage of the god-forsaken Quell twist was that we had the added benefit of already knowing the layout of the Arena. I know we’re not far off the medical wing, and so it only takes a few extra minutes to stumble across it. It’s hard to tell if anyone has been here yet, but I know for a fact that it won’t stay empty for long. Any minute now the other tributes would be pouring in with the same idea as us.

I restrain myself from immediately tearing the place apart and scavenging every last useful medical supply, knowing that the more noise we make, the more likely we are to draw attention to our location. “Did I hear correctly that you were studying to be a medic back home?” I ask Tigs in a hushed voice, pausing with my hand on a medicine cabinet. “So this is like, your realm of expertise? You’ll be able to patch me up after a long day of fighting children?” I chuckle mirthlessly.

You and Arcadia hurried your way through the halls of the training centre carefully on your tip toes like little mice trying to remain undetected. Hand in hand you did your best not to make a sound, not to give a hint to the other tributes of your whereabouts. There was no doubt that you had had enough fighting for the day. More than anything you just wanted to be able to catch your breath for a brief second but it was too late for that. The games had begun and there was no room for peace in a deathmatch.

Your eyes dart around the medical wing, trying to find the bare essentials that you know you would need down the line if you were to survive. Something to stitch up wounds, an antiseptic to avoid as many infections as possible, bandages that could apply enough pressure to stop any heavy bleeding as well as whatever you could scrap together to make a splint in case there were broken bones in need of stabilising.

You were so busy opening draws on the hunt for the simplest of necessities that you almost overheard Arcadia question your past. ”Uhh, I was more of a nurse back in our local hospital…I wanted to go to medical school in six but…” you stopped yourself. Your sob story of possibly failed dreams didn’t matter in the moment. They probably wouldn’t matter if you got out of this alive. Flynn was right, volunteering was not going to land you in the hospital. At least not as a doctor.

”It doesn’t matter, all you need to know is that I have enough medical training to keep us alive without any fancy equipment…hopefully” you respond with your attention still on the task at hand. You quickly move past the girl from district one as you begin to search the next cabinet. ”You search that half of the room, the quicker we get through everything, the quicker we can find somewhere to set up camp and figure out our next move”

Tigs works methodically, taking her time to carefully comb through the drawers and cupboards. I can practically hear the cogs turning in her head as she looks for her treasures.

Me? Well. That’s a different story entirely.

I guess this is the problem with always being the centre of attention. There’s a natural tendency to do everything at a breakneck pace; like there’s never enough time in a day to talk to everyone, to travel, to be the It Girl. Fitting in is hardly a challenge, yet even as I try to tiptoe around the room, I feel myself reverting into the comfort of charisma as a safety blanket.

I force myself to be the chameleon, to become another ghost of District Nine just like Tigs, like Irene.

Right. Yeah. Death games.

Just because your home life was perfect doesn’t mean you should ask everyone about theirs.

I don’t offer her an apology. We know better than to feed each other sympathies.

She’s back to business straight away, slipping into the mind of a future medic easily; I follow her instructions dutifully, inspecting a wad of bandages I find stashed in the corner of a cabinet. I turn to Tigs, eyeing the wound at her stomach. “Want me to help with that?” I offer, trying to be of some use, but mostly just feeling - not for the first time, unfortunately - way out of my depths.

Your eyes glare back at Arcadia with razor sharp question marks as she offers her assistance. Couldn’t she see this was not the time to play doctor and patient? You needed the materials first in order to do that. Once you had gathered the things you needed and found a place to settle down, that was when you could patch eachother up. For now the adrenaline was keeping the pain at bay, but you knew well enough that it wouldn’t last forever and you were going to feel the stab wound eventually.

Wasn’t she a career? Do they not teach strategy at the academy or do they just teach you how to kill someone? Seems like they would need an update in their curriculum. Maybe she could teach you a thing or two about how to cut someone up in exchange for the medical care you are going to provide. Maybe then you would be able to prove to that smug asshole that you can do a lot more than he ever could.

He was still in your head, you needed to move on otherwise your judgement would be clouded by spite and you wouldn’t be able to think clearly. You stuff your sponsored bag with whatever materials you find useful at the moment and quickly move on to the next cabinet above a smooth surface. You were too short to reach it on your own so you hoist yourself up to the counter, shortly screaming in pain as you move your body hastily for your injuries. You’re gonna need stitches and something told you Arcadia would not be the most useful in that situation.

“I’m fine, I promise” you grumble as you start opening the doors and picking through the items. You were not fine, and you knew it. You began to feel light headed from the blood loss, you needed something to apply pressure to try and halt the bleeding. ” Let’s just hurry up, we can’t attend to our wounds here and I don’t want to risk your burn getting infected either. That needs to be looked at as soon as we are out. I'll take care of myself later. Let’s just be grateful Jimmy Garner is a dumb little shit who doesn’t know his human anatomy”. You try to take the focus off of your agony by focusing on hers. If your mind was occupied, then you wouldn’t feel your pain. You were no use to anyone if you could not concentrate on the task at hand.

“Sure doesn’t sound like it,” I mutter to myself under my breath, stuffing the bandages into the pocket of my uniform for safekeeping. I feel her eyes burn into my back for a moment longer before she’s hoisting herself up onto the counter to reach a higher cabinet.

The short yelp that escapes her lips a moment later makes my pulse quicken, skin prickling with something akin to fear. Sympathy boils over, but I clamp down on it. Something tells me she’s not the kind of girl to wallow in her own self-pity. Nevertheless, I move closer to her, standing by on the small off chance she admitted to needing my help after all.

“Let’s just be grateful Jimmy Garner is a dumb little shit who doesn’t know his human anatomy.” She spits venom; I let her blow off the steam. Better to let it out now rather than let the emotions overrule rationality when it came down to business. We’d need all the help we could get once the Games truly began.

Speaking of - “Have you seen Tati and Irene around? We should try and find them.” That had always been the plan - strength in numbers, strength in numbers. I’d never been comfortable with my own solitude; that’s why I’d made sure to build my connections prior to the Games starting, so there was always someone nearby to bounce off. That’s where I did my best work.

Maybe I’m not a medic like Tigs, or a fighter like Alexandra, or a braniac like Axinite. But I have my own strengths of survival, and I was going to utilise every last one of them.
