Name: Ichabod Eller
Age: 16
Gender: Male
District/Area: 7
Appearance:
Ichabod is a plain-faced broad-shouldered young man. Years of working in the sawmill have hardened his muscles and calloused his hands. He is slightly below average height but appears shorter, as he carries himself with a slouch. If he had access to a proper nutritious diet and exercise equipment, he could easily become a real specimen, but as it currently stands, he lacks those resources; this leaves him with a not-quite-flat stomach and not-quite-defined muscles. Despite this, though, he's big and visibly powerful. His arms are large, and his hands are rough and coarse.
Ichabod's hair is a light brown, and shaggy. He doesn't maintain it well at all, but does keep it short to avoid it getting pulled into machinery. He's trying desperately to grow a beard, but at 16, his facial hair is patchy and unimpressive. Someday, he hopes to have a beard as impressive as his grandpa Nash's... but that day seems far off. His face is plain and sad. He's got deepset brown eyes, a squared jaw, thick eyebrows, and a light sprinkling of freckles. When he smiles, he has dimples. He rarely smiles.
Personality:
Ichabod is quiet. He is sturdy. He keeps his head down and works himself hard. When he was younger, he was a much more lively boy, often seen running around the streets and getting into games with kids his age. But recent years have hardened him and changed his priorities.
Ichabod's family is the most important thing in his life, and their reliance on him has made him grow up too fast. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to ensure he is making enough to keep his mother, grandfather, and sister afloat, and he lives to see smiles on their faces. Unfortunately, ensuring their safety and happiness comes at a high cost for Ichabod's own contentment.
Ichabod does allow himself a few hobbies. He loves to whittle, making little trinkets out of bits of wood he takes home from the sawmill. He is also a burgeoning musician. His grandfather gave him his first guitar a few years ago, and Ichabod has been trying to learn it ever since. He likes to walk into the woods on his own and play whenever he has the spare time, which is not often. He's not much of a singer, but he wishes he was. He is learning woodworking from his grandfather, and hopes to someday make instruments and furniture.
History:
Life in Panem is never easy, but Ichabod's early years were relatively happy. His father was a worker in the sawmill, and his mother was a seamstress. Ichabod has a younger sister named Adalia who is 14 years old. Also in their household is Ichabod's paternal grandfather, Nash Eller, a retired woodworker. Nash would have liked to continue working, but his hands became shaky and unreliable in his age, and he found himself unable to complete projects. Nash was taken in by Ichabod's father to ensure that the elder could live out his twilight years in peace. This act by his father left an impression on Ichabod, showing him how important family was, and shaping his idea of what a 'real man' should be willing to do.
When the Rose Plague swept Panem, the Eller family did its best to isolate, but Ichabod's father had to continue working. No one in the household wanted him to leave quarantine, and Ichabod's mother took on more seamstress jobs that she could do inside the home, but it still wasn't enough to support everyone through this time, so Ichabod's father returned to work. It was in the sawmill that Ichabod's father contracted the illness-- but it was at home that he began to exhibit symptoms. In the middle of the night, Ichabod's father wandered the house, experiencing hallucinations and crying out. When Ichabod went to comfort his father, the ill man attacked his son. Ichabod had to fight back, and eventually locked his father in the pantry. Though the man struggled and pounded against the door, it held fast. Ichabod listened helplessly to his father's ranting and raving until medical professionals came to take him away. He died three hours later.
Since the death of his father, Ichabod has striven to fill his shoes. His mom continues to work, but Ichabod knows that his wages at the sawmill are needed to keep them all afloat. His grandfather is clearly devastated to see his grandson growing up so quickly, and Adalia misses having her big brother around to play games with. But Ichabod knows that he has to provide for his family, just as his father did. Between keeping up with his schoolwork and spending hours working at the sawmill, Ichabod has little time for anything else.
