Mama always warned you about the boys with mischievous smiles. She told you that they would only ever break your heart the way your father had broke hers. You never did listen to her. Why would you? She lost her mind decades ago. Everything that came out of her mouth had to be taken with a grain of salt.

Now you sat on the stage, a perfect clown as your black mascara ran in streams down your face. Heart shattered by a boy that never cared for you in the first place.

Like mother like daughter.

Lights beamed down on your face; this was your spotlight. An imaginary audience roared with laughter as you cried at your own misery. They were all laughing now. For someone so smart, you failed to see the truth. What you wanted would never be yours. The world seemed to spin in circles as you tried to make sense of it.

The pieces of the puzzle no longer fit.

In a world so big, a world of endless opportunities. A world that should’ve have belonged to you, you became a fly on the wall. Unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Unimportant in the lives of the people you cared for the most. You fought to find a sense of belonging, something worth fighting for.

Not in the others but in yourself.
