Emerson finds the board game while he's alone in his room, wiping the tears away from his puffy eyes.
Mac breathed his last breath only a couple hours ago, staring at the sun as it sank below a false horizon, his wide gaze turning to glass as his weight became slack in their arms. He and Jack were holding him close, comforting him, and the moment felt almost peaceful. Losing a friend cut Emerson's heart open in a way that he felt would always bleed, but he was grateful that he did not have to experience the loss alone. Maybe that gratitude means that he's selfish at his core, willing to hurt so long as someone else hurts with him.
He knows that Jack had the worst end of the stick; he was the one that avenged Mac, who killed his killer, who had to cope with the two sides of death all in one evening. "Thank you," was all he could think to say, the bare minimum of words that the older boy deserved to hear. He spread his arms and wrapped Jack in a hug before he could protest, a short and warm embrace meant to express how he felt more than sentences ever could. "For everything."
When Wolf appeared in the indigo glow of twilight, as much as he knew he should have felt upset or betrayed, it made the hole on his heart close a little bit. Their quartet had gone down to a duo in a matter of moments that morning, and at least now it was a trio. Even now, he does not blame her for her choice. It was a cruel one, selfish and evasive, but she is her own person with her own voice. And she offered to take him, too.
Whatever the force of nature, he will not leave Jack's side so long as the other boy is willing to let him follow. What matters is that she knew she could come back, equipped with gifts and an apology to boot, but Emerson doesn't need it. He closes the distance between them before any negative feelings can fester, placing a soft hand on her shoulder. This place isn't the real District Ten, but it's the closest semblance to it that he has here. "My home is your home," he says warmly, softly, "and you're always welcome."
Leaving her to address her betrayal to Jack in privacy, he returns a half hour later with the board game in his grasp to see her bandaging the redhead. This makes him smile quietly, happy at least to see them aiding each other instead of conspiring. He knows wholeheartedly that Jack can be trusted, and he believes that she will learn that in time. "So, um, I found this game in my room," he starts, lifting up the package to show it off. "And I thought it might be a fun way to decompress. No pressure."
To his surprise, in only a couple minutes they're all gathered around the game, the sound of cicadas and wind in the wheat surrounding them. "Me and my siblings play this all the time back home, the rules are easy." He's spread a picnic blanket on the grass, they all sit crisscross-applesauce around the board, listening to him as he recites the rules. And then they're playing, and laughing, playfully scolding each other as they try to snake a win. It really feels like he's home again, with two friends he'll be able to keep for a lifetime.
And then, he sees the cow. "Whoa," he says, rising to his feet mid-turn, totally surprised and taken aback by the animal. "Did y'all notice her before?" He looks to his allies who are equally as shocked, watching as the bovine grazes peacefully in the pasture. Emerson, animal lover that he is, can't stop his curiosity from wanting to approach. "Hey, girl," he begins calmly, palm outstretched, beginning to walk closer. "You're alright."
In his mind, he thinks it'll be fun to share this experience with Wolf and Jack. Have they ever pet a cow, he wonders? But he's barely made it a few feet across the pasture before he comes to a halt, gasping in shock as the night sky erupts with a beam of light, engulfing the beast and stunning him into silence. He stares up as the creature rises into the air, mooing in panic, defying gravity. "Guys..." he breathes out, not sure how to process this. A circular shape hovers over the cow, whirring with energy.
To his horror, the animal starts to dissolve before his eyes, making him scream. It disturbs him more than anything else he's seen, watching something living turn into something nonexistent in a span of seconds. The beam of light shuts off, and his stomach lurches, but he can still hear the whirring. In the night sky, the shadow of the circular entity still hovers, and his mind races with the fear that this same fate could befall himself and his friends. He turns back to them, breaking off into a sprint.
"RUN!"
