"It looks like it's lightenin' up a bit," Dolly decided, trying her best to keep Grant in good spirits an hour before the assembly was called. The sun was due to set at any moment, a time of day Dolly had decided was sacred in a time when light was so scarce. She wanted her last moments of daylight to be spent with him. Of course, she didn't ever say that... Just sort of, always showed up, always planned things so they were near each other when the darkness came. It was always somehow instantly colder.
But today was the first time in a long time that the sunset actually felt like a sunset. As in, it wasn't already basically night outside at the moment. As in, maybe the storm was finally bored of trying to freeze them all to death and make her every barefooted walk from bed to bathroom in the early morning awful. Or, maybe it was just lingering optimism from those idiot fourteen-year-olds who couldn't tell the difference between a vehicle's engine and the sound of the same generators that'd been running for two weeks now. Regardless, it made the moment when his somehow-still sun-kissed skin faded to cool blue that much more special.
"See ya tomorrow." Chaste peck- the kind of kiss you give when you expect to give them for the rest of your life- and then she was slinking out of his room and out of the boys' wing a whole three minutes before Professor Cheng came around for room checks. She was basically a professional, at this point. Was that a thing? Being a relationship professional?
Whatever, if it was a thing, then she definitely was.
She took a shower and quietly resented the lukewarm water. At least it wasn't cold- the generators were doing their best. Once she was out she took some time to admire a painting hanging in the hallway depicting a rusty handsaw with unsettlingly realistic human eyes staring right back at her. The plaque below the painting read Seesaw, by Bronte Snowspire. Dolly smiled fondly, remembering the year it was made like it was yesterday, even though it was probably more than a decade ago by this point that Bronte had submitted it for an April Fools art contest. Even back then, the kid had more of a sense of identity than most could ever hope for. She was admiring the realistic curvature of the veins in the eyes when the announcement sounded, summoning everyone to the dining hall for an assembly.
"Wha- Wh-Uh- Wha-uh!? An assembly? An assembly on a school night?" She groaned to herself, rushing the rest of the way to her room to change from her towel into a full uniform and hastily making her way to the dining hall.
Somehow, she was still one of the first of her grade to arrive. She smiled, impressed with herself as she took her seat at the very last table, which was reserved for the eighteen's. Some hated it because it was the table closest to the raised platform where the faculty sat, but that made no sense to Dolly. It was the best seat in the house because of that. No more practically giving herself a nosebleed trying to hear what old man Walters was mumbling through his speeches about.
Ahem.
Respectfully.
"Hey Pippa, hi Twins, hello Lovie. Hanna." She cleared her throat. "I hope this doesn't drag on. It's Bio Bingo Day tomorrow in Professor Bingham's class!" She waited for the rest of the school to fill in the vacant seats, some of the staff taking even longer than the students, before Headmaster Walters eventually made his way up to the podium. Say what you want, the man was as intimidating as he was senile. Everyone was instantly waiting to hear from him.
And then the generators went out. The few emergency lights in the hallway flickered out soon after and the candles suddenly seemed more vulnerable. "Oh boy," She groaned.
"What you've just heard is the sound of the last generator turning off," Walters explained above them. She craned her neck so that she could see him properly while he continued. "Do not panic. This is because, in roughly thirty seconds, our full power will be restored! We received word that the worst of the storm has passed us earlier today while receiving a small supply shipment from down the mountain. Professors will resume teaching their regular lesson-plans tomorrow morning and once pathways have been cleared, access to all secondary buildings and locations will be permitted until further notice. Just in time, too," Dolly sighed. She should've waited to shower. Everyone else seemed pretty relieved, though. But Walters wasn't finished yet.
"-for the time has come for us to wish fair weather to our dear Deliveryman as he continues his journey elsewhere. This evening's visit, regrettably, will be his last." And it turned out the idiot fourteen-year-old's weren't idiots after all. At least not this time. There was a weirdly electric reaction that washed across the room. None of them had ever directly interacted with the guy- no one even knew what his real name was. But in a world where people were so... finite, it still felt like Dolly was losing something important in her life.
Immediately, she began to scan the room to find Grant.
