Emerson falls, his knees buckling before they crash to the cement floor. Instantly my weapon slips from my hands and I am rushing towards him, catching him before his head his the ground. The weight of his body against mine nearly has me toppling over, but I adjust the position of my hips and manage to ease him to the ground gently.
"Emerson," I whisper as I place his head on my lap, my fingers brushing away the tears from his cheeks. "It's okay, It's okay," I murmur as I reach for his hand, wrapping my fingers tightly around his fingers. "I'm here, I'm here," my free hand runs through his hair, in the comforting way that mum used to do to me when I was sick or upset.
With the hand clasped in mine I lay it against his chest, my fingers squeezing tightly as I studied his face. It was so pale, dull, grey almost. My lower lip trembles as I study him, and I fight back the sob that climbs my throat because I refused to cry. This moment wasn't about me, this moment was about him, about giving him what he needed, what I promised. "I can't sing, but do you want me to tell you a story about home?" I say quietly as my thumb sweeps across the cool skin on the back of his hand.
"Did you know that I have a cat? Pretzel," I smile a little at the memory of the ginger cat. "I found her dumped out the back of my brothers friends burger joint. She was flea ridden and missing half a tail and at first Dad had refused to let me bring in her into the house." My fingers continue to brush through his hair as I speak.
