Oleander Murdock hat attempted his best to secure the free tickets available to those of highest regards in society but failed to achieve such. Instead, he had reluctantly bought the desired tickets giving the instructions that if anyone were to ask; they were invited to attend for free. Keep up the appearance of nobility amongst the commoners. A few of his offspring had been given the chance to individually represent the family in different events; Circe was to prove herself in the hunger games simulator.
”You are being rewarded with an opportunity to display our family’s talent. This is not something I have decided lightly, you have proven yourself loyal to the Murdock name. I am expecting you to be on your best behavior.”
The hunger games simulator was Circe’s chance to prove to everyone that she was the most ruthless career the family had produced; in her eyes this was the moment she had been waiting for to make her mark as the one who would eventually carry on the family legacy. Every calculated step wove a pattern of ambition, ignoring that she was visibly a bastard. Her presentation was her moment to prove that she was worth the Murdock name just as any of her half siblings.
She smiled as the camera flashed for a family portrait, her brand new outfit for the occasion displaying the generational wealth. Virtue as she shook the hands extended to her, none of it genuine for it was all a show. She was an expensive attraction in the Murdock circus, freedom caged behind a firm patriarch that ran the show even if she was not aware she was completely under his influence.
Time had passed as she patiently waited for her turn, clapping at the end of each simulation before her however her mind was not paying attention to the other contestants. It did not matter how they performed, all that mattered was that she did better.
Her father gave her a slight nod as she stepped up to the plate, both a sign of approval and warning for if she were to fail only fate would know of the horror awaiting her in the four walls of the glass castle. Heart pounding in her chest she gripped her spear tight and kept her head held high as the pixels started to form displaying her holographic opponent.
Blair Murdock.
His face familiar from old pictures occasionally found in the house despite being a rare sight. His name well known to Circe for all the family’s pride and laurels rested on his victory. She did not hesitate, not even when the stake became a stinging stab wound in her side. If she could not beat Blair, even if it was nothing more than a holograph, she would become a laughingstock. Circe feared a loss would mean she would never be good enough. All her hours of training, every time she sabotaged a sibling in the name of loyalty would mean nothing. She would mean nothing.
Without a second’s time wasted, she was wielding her weapon against her grandfather. ”You are not winning this one, Blair”, she muttered under her voice.
