There was a time when no one knew who they were tied to.
People just walked through life guessing whom they were supposed to end up with. Things were messy, hearts were broken again and again until humanity grew cold from it. Then finally, two centuries ago, the adaptation appeared.
In that generation, every year on their birthday after they turned fifteen, some people would spend a small part of their day watching life through the eyes of their soulmate. At first, people didn't understand what it was, they tried to cure it. Hundreds of people were diagnosed with a new personality disorder. Medications were developed, a vaccine created to inject at birth even.
Then the first thesis was written. After that came experiments, then a policy change.
A hundred years later, Oblivion Whitley is sitting down for breakfast on his birthday and blinks. When he opens his eyes again, the meal is gone, instead there is an unfamiliar school desk and words he cannot read on the paper beneath his elbow which is not his elbow and a hand writing which is his but not his. He cannot turn his head, cannot snap himself out of it, can only wait for something to happen and take in the details of the situation.
Navy blue uniforms with an emblem in what he assumes is English, the sound of a school bell ringing and the sudden flurry of movement, a stop at a locker, people's feet and then finally, a grey sky. His face stays turned upwards towards it for a few long minutes and then the eyes shut.
When he opens them again, his breakfast is gone from in front of him and he is going to be late for school.
But his grandma pats him on the head and places warm food in front of him again.
"Today, you can be late," she tells him.
