I'm here at the technology fair because we got a discount--and Mom's new sketchy boyfriend bought us the tickets. Now they're over at some kind of bar trying the holiday drinks. It's a welcome break from the guy's constant bragging about artwork he knows about. I prefer to be alone.

Mom said I need to become more independent. Step outside of my comfort zone and try something new. So I thought, I'll give it a shot. It's not like they're going to kill me. I've played video games like this before.

Now how the hell do I drive this thing?

I step into the seat--cockpit? whatever--and pull the straps over my shoulders. Thankfully these rentals seem a little safer than the makeshift cars I see some of my competitors driving. The helmet goes on, and I turn the key.

The engine roars to life.

Thankfully none of those familiar dark shapes enter the corners of my vision. If they came right now, I would definitely crash. I push the thought from my mind so I don't jinx myself.
