There was always an errand to run or job that needed to be done. Not a day had gone by since my life began in district one where there was not something to do. A small gear in need of oiling to get the big machine of my family running properly.
Over the years I had learned that asking questions would not get you very far, if you did what you were told eventually answers would find their way to you. It took time, everything took time. Perfectly calculated time but no one knew when the clock began and when it ended.
The letter with clear instructions was laid out for me when I entered the shop, Georgina was there. Perfectly capable of running things on her own. She did not need my help or probably anyone’s for that matter, she knew the shop better than anyone else did.
There was no need for a goodbye or have fun, just a slight nod of my head letting her know that there were other matters to attend to. A visit to the apothecary, a chance to see Oni. There were not many people in district one that I enjoyed spending my time with. Even if it was always for work, for a job, Oni had a way about herself that I couldn’t quit grasp. Something that set of my alarms but also calmed them down with every word. I took every chance I got to pay her a visit, even if it was selfish in a sense.
I pushed open the door and the bells chimed my arrival before I had a chance to speak.
”Oni, you around?”, I called out into the shop. ”I’ve got another order.” my breath fell silent as I waited for her to appear, hoping that it was her. Something about doing business with anyone else felt like a minor betrayal.
