I had a lot of time.

Sick a lot as a kid. Cheek pressed to the bedroom door, playing with the lock and a paperclip. Open, close, open, close. That one was easy.

But then the door to the Matron's office. That had a keyhole. But I had so much time, right? Two paperclips now, hit the pin tumblers, mostly just brute force.

Got curious, you know how it is. Tried an empty apartment across town, recently vacated. Didn't work the same. Thought about it for a few days. The latch was spring loaded. Went to get an energy drink. Stole the cashier's ID. Slid the card between the door and frame. Bent the plastic until I felt it slide the bolt back. It opened.

I gave back the ID, of course.

Said he dropped it.

Laid inside the apartment, just chilled, listened to old tapes on a relic of a cassette player. Never had so much space for myself. It was fun, mimed living in it, though all the furniture was gone. So I got chalk and drew the outlines of a home on the old wood floors.

I had a lot of time.

Sick again. Got screamed at for smoking. Well, live a little.

Bought faulty locks on discount as the factories closed. Played with those. Some didn't have pins in them. That was interesting. I found an old key and shaved down the picks. Opened it. Then a dimple lock, two sets of pins. Had to gut it the first time to see the mechanism. The pick had to have more of a curve for it. A bike lock. That one was hard. Had a tubular core. The tension was different.

But why stop at a lock? Got boring.

Suddenly had my hands on a safe.

It took awhile. Aged out of the home. Started working at the sandwich shop. Butter Baby. Funny name. Didn't have as much time. But had more money. Made a set of picks. Bought a drill. Named her Jill. Rhymes with drill.

Got caught in the wrong house. Didn't take anything, just like going through the fridge mostly. Still got put in the slammer for a day. Got bailed by the guy who owned the place. Said he had a job for me. Alright darling, let's roll.
