"thought i was the only one,
turned out i was everyone"
The work day in Winter feels endless. I get to see a sliver of the rising sun beyond the outstretch of roofs in front of her as I duck through the factory door in the morning, and by the time I get out, it's dark all over again. I sleep, somehow avoiding any rest, and it all happens again tomorrow; one day bleeding into the next. Most of the time, I don't bother stopping anywhere; I just drag my feet all the way back home. But tomorrow is garbage day for my factory, which means there's a whole bin of discarded, "waste" material for me to wade through.
I wait around for an hour or so, passing the time with the current knitting project I keep in my bag for moments just like this — baby footie pajamas for my latest niece. When I'm sure the last of the stragglers have left, I sneak around the side of the factory to the dumpsters to start rifling.
My legs are shaky, but my arms are strong; I hoist myself up and get to work. I don't like any amount of waste, but there's only so much I can store in my bag, a crossbody fabric thing, constructed from patches from all of the discarded, dud garments QA deemed unacceptable. Waste is the only thing I hate more than trouble. This fortnightly scavenger hunt and what I make from it are the only things I deem worth risking my peace.
By this time next week, these Capitol rejects would become doll dresses, and baby gowns, and bed sets, and cushion covers for the rabbit-like Jeons and my friends. Those things, and whatever else they want or need, to give them some of the peace I receive when I'm left alone to sew for love, instead of for some nameless debutante a world away.
Bag full, I hop down from my perch. My ankle almost gives out, but I save myself at the last second. It still hurts, so I reach down to massage it. When I look up, I see a girl. Astrid? Aster? Something like that. I meet her eyes, staying cool and start to walk towards her on my unsteady legs.
