Mayor Eurydice Le Roux started the morning's events off with a speech, addressing the entire crowd live. Panem's anthem played and a few of the more excited tributes hummed along from their places around the Square, locking arms and dancing as if festive. Eventually, escort Romeo Ford sauntered onto the stage, his short-cropped hair dyed an interesting hue of lime green. He wore pink designer sunglasses on his head like a visor, and the shoulders of his coat were covered in plumes of lime green to match the hair. "It is time," he said as he stood over the impatient people of the District, "To once again send two of our own children to the Capitol to compete in the Hunger Games. Let us begin the Reaping!"

He did not look to see the reaction of his district before reaching into the glass ball that held the names of the children. "First up," the Escort announced, pulling out a slip of paper. He unfolded it and read out to the crowd, "Rita Jakov!" They then reached into the ball again, selecting another name. "Xylia Fray!"

It was meant to bring fame.

And money and happiness and whatever the hell else was supposed to happen when someone with your family name won the Hunger Games. But not for Xylia.

No, Justice Fray winning had only brought shame and grief to her family.

Expectations that were already exponentially high for her success grew greatly, and her life began to revolve around one thing.

The Hunger Games.

For years when she would try to express interest in anything other than training, she was immediately shut down, occasionally punished if she dared to show defiance. Some hidden scars of proof still stained her body, but they blended so seamlessly with the others from training that no one dared question their origin.

It made her stronger.

That’s what she told herself at least as she spent day and night fighting to become better. Fighting to become the best. It was meant to be motivation, having a Fray who already won. That is what her father would tell her at least.

Too bad he’s dead.

Just another misfortune to blame on Justice Fray.

He drank himself to death, so ashamed of his children that he saw no other way out besides to drown himself. Some may have given up, let themselves be swallowed up by their sorrows, but no Xylia. She continued to arrive at the training center at dawn and worked her ass off. Pushing down everything inside that threatened to boil over and destroy her from the inside. Pushing down her father until he was nothing more than a distant memory and trapped him in a neat little box.

He was a bastard anyway.

The real reason she trained wasn’t to make her dead father proud or prove him wrong. No, it was to get back at Justice Fray and somehow settle the score for every misfortune he set upon her family.

Don’t worry, she’s been keeping count.

So when the District One escort spoke the sweet cadence of her name a smile played upon her lips as she walked to the stage with such feline grace it would make any man tremble. A polite wave to the crowd as she walked and when she ascended the stairs she made sure to turn to her cousin and give him the most wicked grin before taking her place on stage.

This was going to be fun.

they won’t tell you fairytales of how
girls can be dangerous and still win

I wish I had known today was going to be the first day of the rest of my life when I woke up this morning. I would have worn a different lip color. One that really compliments my blush, you know? I look over to the huge, over-sized screen at the front of the crowd and almost cringe at how pale I look.

Mother is going to be furious.

Ever since I was a girl, I have known exactly two things to be true above all else. One, looks matter. More than anything else. And two, if I make a mistake or take a misstep, my mother absolutely will have something to say about it.

That's why I became an expert at number one: looks. It never hurt that I've always been beautiful. Drop dead gorgeous, really. I mean, look at me. But right now the harsh white light of the overcast sky is washing out my complexion and I'll be damned if this is how I'm remembered. As an ugly, pasty nobody from One.

So, I toss my hair over my shoulder in a dramatic flourish and stride a few steps over toward the mic, toward Eurydice. A pout pulls my lips down as our eyes meet, feigning sadness at her complete lack of representation this reaping. Away from the crowd, as I tilt my shoulder and wrap a hand around the microphone, I let that pout fade and twist into a grin.

"Better luck next year, Le Roux," I blow her a kiss and then turn back toward the crowd, giving them a chance to take in this unprecedented address - giving them a chance to take me in from head to toe. Which is a blessing, really, for them. "Maybe this year we can finally bring it home this time, yeah?" My intent is to rile the crowd, to convince them their victor is already before them. No, not the dullard to my left who barely looks camera-ready. Are those split ends? Ew.

I offer her a toothy smile, though. A soft glance meant to fill her with confidence, to convince her I mean her. After all, she's going to be useful. Necessary. I just hope she's easy to manipulate. That reveals itself quite quickly though when I toss her a wink as the crowd erupts in cheers. "To One!" A fist shot toward the air, and then we're being ushered back and off the stage. She takes my hand eagerly when I offer. The guise of a united front. A lie told, a move made and accepted in under a millisecond.

I laced our fingers together and pulled her along after the keepers, thinking to myself just how easy this was going to be. You'll be such a fun toy to play with.
