I'm starting to miss the warmth of the sun. We have been spending most of our time in the training room, which is what I imagine the gym of a jail would look like. No outdoor light or air to help warm the marble floor and stone walls. Although I'm still looking at the walls, trying to imagine what horrors they may contain. I remind myself this is not the same training center as last year, yet the similarities are unnerving. It's hard for me to stay present in the moment, always wondering if ghosts from the past would find a way to haunt us.

I take a few moments to breathe, centering myself when I make my way to the center of the Training Room, hoping no fighting ring would jump up around me. It's been nice to take in the sites of the other tributes training; it's hard to tell who I would be the most concerned about at the moment, as everyone clearly has their own strengths and weaknesses, that is, if they are being entirely honest while training in front of others. Were others watching me the same way I was watching others?

I'm not the tallest one here; a few other boys are the same height or just an inch or two shorter than me, so I know I was not a target based on that alone. Yet, I notice that one of the other taller boys seems more relaxed. He also volunteered, yet now it appears that he's just relaxing, not appearing to care about anything around him outside of the cigarette in his fingers. How did he even smuggle that in here? He would be a safe bet to approach, so I do just that. I take the entire length of my stride in no hurry to make my way over to him.

"So," I start, trying to keep my voice casual and inquisitive. "Are you not feeling like training right now?"

For what it was worth, and that shit wasn't much, the rules of the Training Center were a lot more relaxed than Axyl had expected. He knew it was untrue, that the ghosts that walked the hallways could care less whether people like him were alive or dead, knew that they'd much prefer the latter than anything else, but still.

He's still got an eye sitting wary on the Training Center dummies as he approaches the corner of the training room, stowing the hatchet he'd nabbed from the weapons rack on the surface of one of the tables, catching a stray dirty look from one of the trainers who is bound to have to put it back. But hey, in a week or so one of them will be alive, and it's certainly not the eighteen year old with a stray cigarette laced between his fingers.

There's steel that presses against his back as he leans against the walls of the room, a plethora of stolen items nabbed from around the building pressed into his palms and nerve pressed into his veins. A cigarette, a lighter, a thumbtack (for some reason?) and a half-eaten breakfast bar from the cafeteria. It's a lack of impulse control that drags him along a path of his own making, the very same thing that has gotten him into trouble here and there and everywhere so many times before.

He bites it back, the realization. The feeling of knowing, of having to acknowledge it all.

Because it's easier to be a poltergeist in a place like this- taking things from where they were and leaving nothing but a disheveled and foreign mess in one's wake. A defense and a survival mechanism wrapped in one, it's why he's lost in thoughts of his own making when one of his fellow tributes approaches him, counting the spots on the walls leftover from tributes past.

"So-" And blue eyes flit over, focus into someone he'll need to kill to make it out, as if that was an option. "Are you not feeling like training right now?"

Here's how it goes in response: A furrow of the brows, a cocked head, a shrug and then a sigh. "Six and Ten, right?" He says quietly, putting both of them in their place at once. Marik Shadow had won the 95th to the Capitol's dismay- the odds weren't exactly stacked in their favor. "Not like either of us are going to match the Careers before we get in there, yeah?" It's a question designed to be left unanswered, better left dead after all.

"What 'bout you? This a meet and greet I didn't know about or something?"

I want to point out that last year, both District One girls were killed by boys from Seven and Twelve. Yet, something about the tone of his voice gives me pause. It's as if he doesn't even want to talk to anyone. It seems like he doesn't even want to try. Why did he volunteer if he came in with the attitude that he didn't stand a chance? I don't think that's something that I can fully understand.

"What 'bout you? This a meet and greet I didn't know about or something?"

"No, I'm just trying to get to know everyone. If we're going to kill each other, shouldn't we at least know who we're killing? Or is that not cool enough for you?" I respond in kind, doing nothing to hide the annoyance in my voice. Apathy always has a way of burrowing under my skin, and this time is no different.

"Can I ask you something?" I ask, the bitterness evident in my tone. I continue on before he even answers. "What was the point of volunteering if you act like you don't even stand a chance?" I wonder if this boy has a secret death wish; if so, this is one less person that I need to focus on. I just let him die in the bloodbath without any consequences.
