I'm still getting used to waking up in the silken sheets of my bed in the Training Center. It's almost too soft, and it's only a constant reminder of how I'm now one of the kids shepherded off for the entertainment of the Capital. It's shitty, but there's no point in trying to fight it now. Fighting against that would only hurt me in the long run. I can scream, cry, and pout all I want, talking about unfairness. Or, I can try my best and say I gave the Games everything I had. That last part is probably part of the entertainment of it all. Watching kids in dire situations bear their hearts and souls in the slim, hopeful chance that they will be spared.

As much as I want to focus solely on things like plants and fire-making, I must show the Gamemakers that I know how to fight. It's not just about the Gamemakers at this point, but showcasing what I'm made of to the other tributes. Plus, I've been wanting to show off for Garnet and Rhys. It may be because I like to show that I can take care of them as my allies or something more than that. I'm still determining if I'll ever get to explore how I feel about them, but I can at least show them my worth for now.

Hand-to-hand fighting would be an excellent place to start. Being tall and muscular would be advantageous here. As I work with the trainer, I use my long limbs to my advantage, using my legs to trip the trainer from a distance and my reach to close gaps from those trying to run away from me. Plus, I can use my height to help throw people around. However, my height does cause me to have a higher center of gravity, so I learned that others can use that to trip me up.

The trainer and I work up a good sweat, and I lift my shirt to wipe the sweat from my brow. I notice as I start to lower my shirt that a girl is looking at me. I can't tell if her look is one of desire, admiration, or something more damaging like ire, but I find a moment to cut the tension with a playful jest.

"Do you like what you see?" I say with a cheeky wink and smirk. I must admit she's pretty cute, so what's the harm with a bit of flirting?

Marguerite settled on hand-to-hand because she’d wanted to ease into one of her better events first. She tended to use her small size to grapple against larger opponents and leverage her speed to propel her to a fast victory. She imagined that armed with a knife or a blunt edged weapon of some kind, she’d throw herself upon them, drag through their leg, turn over their back, and either stab for the neck or attempt to bash their heads in for a quick victory.

She was under no illusion, however, that her skills could not be tested. Time and again she’d watched other kids from two wind up overwhelmed by a lower districter or fellow career all because of their hubris. If anything, Marguerite had always been cautious of her own ability. Luck, it seemed, had not favored her or else she would not be in this predicament.

Ten tussled with the trainer, and Marguerite stopped to observe how little regard the boy had for his own body. It reminded her of how dogs fought. They would hurl their bodies at one another, legs extended, swinging their hips to throw their weight around before crashing down again. He could not be discounted for his strength and sense of where to push his opponent. However, hand-to-hand was won not only on strength, but maximizing the weak points of your opponent.

Marguerite was turning over the different ways she would’ve angled herself to put him into a hold that would’ve choked him out when she heard his voice.

“Oh.” She blinked. She should’ve expected this. Men tended to think that any sort of gaze was sexual. They couldn’t help that the few braincells they had ultimately seized up and assessed what they saw on fuckability. And now he was turning around thinking Maggie glancing over had been drawn by his physique. “It was okay but I think you could’ve done better.”

"You should work on your distance to the ground and your hand positioning,” Maggie kept it curt and matter-of-fact. “You left yourself open half the time.”
