This job is essentially babysitting. Every single one of them has been a nuisance for Ivan (while most have behaved – their mere existence is just a burden) but there have been some particular ones that have been blowing up his radar. His days will be blessed the moment they’re all herded into the arena, then it is just the matter of hitting some buttons and watching them go KABOOM. But for now, he must send his assistants out to clean up after the tributes and keep this brand-new training centre in one piece.
Today is a little different though. It pains him to follow the ’business wisdom’ of his old crony father. Ivan’s sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, he is out of the safety of the Gamemaker’s headquarters and loose in the field. He is not amongst the tributes though, instead he is scratching heads in the now cordoned off pool room with trainers, officials and even avoxes.
”The robots will get this place squeaky clean, but…” It is a total disaster in here, the aftermath of a teenage party. Paint, food, decorations and questionable pieces of trash that Ivan is careful not step on in his newly polished deck shoes. ”Don’t boot up the robots. And YOU give me that.” Ivan snatches a mop from one of the avoxes. ”You and the others can make yourself useful elsewhere.” He orders them out of the room and chucks the mop into a filled bucket of bleach. ”I know the perfect person for this job.”
While Ivan is excitedly intrigued by Felicity Carrow and Charlotte Royce, only because of the fact their performance now determines the quality of the District he oversees which ultimately has an affect on his reputation. There are other tributes that have plucked his interest, for the better and the worst. Gunner Azarova is proving a pain; the mystery of the missing key cards has led him to the Ninth floor. Something he will be slapping on Maryn’s desk later today. The first matter though is the after party of Lucky Nachtnebel. A prime example of a tribute, District Four career but also a big pain in the ass.
Ivan stands at the entrance of the main training station room; he asks the nearest trainer to bring Lucky to him. The thing about the deck shoes that Ivan is wearing, is that they have a three-inch sole. Ivan is a measly five foot six inches, and with the artificial height he still needs to look up at Lucky. What the fuck do they feed these District kids?
A trapping trainer introduces Ivan to Lucky, but Ivan doesn’t let the trainer leave. ”You can come with us too.” Extra protection with a trained killer that is nearly a whole foot taller than him, there’s some handkerchiefs in his trouser pocket but he doubts his colleagues will take kindly to an early death.
”We’re so sorry we missed your special day Lucky. Happy belated birthday to you! Now come follow me, us gamemakers have a special treat for you.” Ivan leads the tribute and trainer the longest way possible back to the pool room, he has got to build up the tension.
”You forgot some names on your invite list though. You didn’t have to put Hades or even Maryn down but honestly, I am so disappointed. Even Trapper here,” Ivan points at the rugged aged bald man, who still isn’t as tall as the tribute they’re escorting. ”We didn’t miss a thing. Cameras! They’re everywhere!” Ivan talks with his hands, pointing up at the ceiling to the hidden surveillance, the door to the pool room is in sight. ”We can see everything. We know when you’re practicing, sleeping, taking a dump and working with District Nine’s to steal key cards to get into the pool room.” The gamemaker swipes his own card on the door and pushes it open, ”Birthday boys first.”
It is exactly how he left it, a complete bomb zone that is waiting for Lucky to clean it up. ”While I don’t have all day to watch you clean this, I am sure the highlights will be fucking entertaining later. Trapper here will make sure he can see his ugly face in the spotless pool tiles.” Ivan pulls the mop from the bucket he salvaged earlier and throws it at Lucky. ”I’ll give you one birthday wish before I go just because I am feeling generous and I do love a birthday!”Dars
