Everyone in the tech team is scratching their heads while Ivan is giggling at the back of the room, there is a frenzy of code on all the screens as they try and figure out what caused the glitch to the scoring system. Ivan knows, or he is suspicious. It may be the games of minesweeper during the private training sessions, and the champagne and sauce spilled on someone’s device… but Ivan Korsch is not a man to raise his own hand, instead he is pointing it at someone else.

”Well, I have my suspicions! It could be the same person that added background music during their session…” Ivan crosses his hands, all he gets is doubt in the room of computer nerds. How dare they doubt his District Threes! He bets they could find the bug quicker than any of these lifeless geeks (though he is hoping nobody is able to find it – for his own sake!)

”If I prove you wrong, which one of you should I fire first?” Ivan asks the head tech person who simultaneously sweats as he asks the question. He sets out of the door before they can answer, on the hunt for Felicity Carrow.

Tributes should all be in their District quarters, Ivan hadn’t planned to visit any of them during his time as Gamemaker. Visiting District Three’s quarters in his current position? Yeah, that is going to add to the favouritism accusations – but whatever! He already had grief from his reaction to Lucky’s training session.

A short elevator ride later and an unannounced burst through the door, and Ivan is in District Three’s quarters. It is a busy room, escorts, Klaus, Atticus and the now favourite tribute in the bookmakers’ ring after the training score announcement, Felicity.

Ivan points at Felicity across the room. ”Miss Number 10, outside with me.” The sudden unease in the room because of Ivan’s presence makes him sigh, yeah this is all unexpected but they all honestly needs to calm down. ”Don’t shit your panties people! She’ll be back in here in no time, there is a podium with her name on it for the bloodbath after all.” Ivan kicks open the door again and holds it for Felicity.

I had never been particularly good at noticing danger when it came my way, but when Ivan Korsach bursts through the suite doors, it's hard to miss when it trails behind him like a shadow.

I knew the ten was going to fuck me.

Everyone looked at me afterward. Normally, I'd have killed for something like that, but not here, not now, when I'm the loose end in a rebel faction stealing (and frankly, upgrading) Capitol tech responsible for multiple shipping delays and fulfillment failures. I'd known joining Abraham could mean hard consequences, I just never thought I'd stare them down in the form of a pair of blue eyes, attached to the walking lawsuit that is the High Councillor before her now.

"Right," I can't swallow the lump in my throat, the roaring fear rising in the pit of my stomach. It drowns out so much else, coloring everything black and green where my vision starts to stop. Taking in a quick breath, I realize I'd been holding my breath. I'm stopped right in the middle of the hallway where I'd been pacing back and forth like a bored house cat, and I freeze for a second sorting out something to say. "I was actually just about to brush my teeth, so like, you know, I should go do th—" and sort of sideways step towards the bathroom, but something about the look on Atticus's face stops me in my tracks. Slowly, Felicity turned back to look at Ivan, eyes bright. "Lead the way Mr. Gamemaker Sir Boss Man."

Other circumstances, I'd salute him, roll my eyes, hell I might even spit on his boots and actually walk away, but this reality is not those. Instead, I shove my hands in my pockets to hide their trembling and file obediently through the open doorway. My boots feel like heavy weights on my ankles with every step.

I do my best not to wince when I hear it click shut behind me.

and if love is real, maybe i’m just too bad
to remember how good it feels.

Ivan looks up and down at Felicity when they’re alone in the hallway, wow she actually looks frightened. All five foot six inches of Ivan Korsch has someone trembling for their life? This is a first! A part of him wants to keep it going as he leads the way to the elevator, not saying a word.

So, he will draw it out a little, it his job to intimidate the tributes, right?

The doors of the elevator slide shut and Ivan’s hand hovers over the buttons, a few extra floors have been added to the training centre since the upgrade. He is not even sure where he is going to take her, he can’t just lead her to the tech room and hope she’ll confess to something he knows she hasn’t done. Maybe she could though, with a little persuading. A little hope before the death games can go a long way and why not pin the glitch on someone that is most likely to die in a week? (Not himself – he is not planning on that!)

Ivan exhales and hits all of the buttons on the elevator’s panel, perhaps a quick journey up and down the building will be enough to draw out a confession.

”Holy shit, you can relax! Don’t worry, I am no Maryn Hale, I don’t intend to beat up a District Three tribute! I’ll leave that up to the others.” Ivan leans his back against the glass and crosses his hands but he can’t get comfortable for long. The elevator already stops on the sixth floor and the door opens to a curly haired freak victor. ”Fuck off, get the next one!” Ivan hits the closed door button and doors slam shut in the victor’s face.

”So tell me, what other Capitol tech have you been meddling with? Besides the panel in the training room. The training score system perhaps, thought you could score better than a 10 did you? You might need to rehearse an apology for Lionel, Sage, Marcellus, Juno and Hugo.” Damn it is exhausting saying all those names. ”Before you face them in the arena, poor kids are going in without any support, all because of you!”
