I ain't proud of all the punches that I've thrown
In the name of someone I no longer know
For the shame of being young, drunk, and alone
When Marguerite finally emerged from the edges of the mines and out to the other side, she was ready to be greeted by the chill of the afternoon air.
She’d never been claustrophobic, so the tightness of the mineshafts hadn’t been a problem so much as the inky darkness that pervaded every step. That, and she’d wondered just what her place in these games truly would be.
They had lost Azure yesterday, and somehow, Maggie hadn’t ever imagined one of them would go so quickly. Even Ines had held her own in the bloodbath, and didn’t shrink with fear when the opportunity presented itself to step forward. Azure was supposed to be alongside Maggie as the fire to her ice – the intensity to her calculation.
At least she hadn’t lost sight of the fact that they would need the bare essentials. They had food and, with the parachutes dropping yesterday and today, water. She’d placed an iodine tablet in her filled water bottle and tucked it into her backpack. Sierra had scuttled about in the snow casting sidelong glances and mewling. Now and again, she’d scamper between Maggie’s legs only to throw herself into the snow once again.
There hadn’t been a single cannon that day which meant tomorrow would likely be a bloodbath. With the grim luck of district two, she wondered what her last possible moments could’ve been spent doing, but then decided that it wasn’t time to be defeatist yet. While Maggie could be pragmatic to a fault, she’d cleaned herself up nicely from the stab wounds yesterday. Well enough that she couldn’t manage teaching one of the two of them a lesson if she could.
Maggie leaned down to tie her shoes and stared out at the shadows cast before her. She heard the crack of snow in the distance and the rustle of trees.
She stood and shoved her hands in her pockets.
It was going to be a long night.
