some people just don't appreciate a good thing.
it's not their fault, of course. some people are naturally not particularly intelligent.
i suppose it never occurred to the district four girl why we are here. i'm sure it's only natural she would panic. she's like a fish, caught in a net, flapping around manically, the single neuron in her brain flashing, over and over: get me out of here. i admit that the primal, animal part of me, the part that didn't understand the bigger picture, felt the same. but i told it to hush, to focus on the prize at the end of this whole thing. the discomfort, the lack of clean towels - all of it will be worth it in the end.
the fish girl is in handcuffs. she fought so hard they locked her up even tighter than the rest of us. it was painful to watch, the way she tried in earnest to escape. this enclosure is capitol made; i'm certain it could hold even the smartest, bravest person in panem, never mind a haughty looking teenager. her dark hair is tangled, her eyes wild. she looks like she would have no idea how to correctly fold a napkin, never mind escape from a high-security enclosure, but she tried anyway. it's almost endearing, her self-confidence.
she is slumped in the dirt, making no effort to hide the metal cuffs that mark her as an idiot.is she not ashamed?i take pity on her, because i am not unkind, and, although she is obviously not cut out for this sort of thing, i wonder if i can bestow a little clarity upon her, make it all a little easier. that is, of course, if she is capable of talking sense. i approach her cautiously, as though she is a dangerous animal. i half expect her to hiss at me when i speak.
"it looks like you got yourself into some trouble, there," i say, diplomatically, raising an eyebrow. i am brave enough to edge closer to her. "i'm october, by the way. october rhapsody fray. i might be able to help you."
i might be able to help her get it together, i mean. show her how to plaster on a smile, to wave at the onlookers, to make sure she is showing her best angles to the cameras. just because someone is going to die, it doesn't mean they have to publicly embarrass themselves doing it.
