God, this is awkward. Torrid tension creeps around the corners of the train car. I sit in the corner furthest from the girl, October. I recognize her from school. Although she's a couple of grades below me, her reputation is… paramount, for lack of a better word. I hid my disdain from her in the halls, accepting plus-ones and keeping a distance from her "Kiss Every Dickwad in Wolfgang High" game. I told Charlie and his guy friends once that she wanted to use their lips for clout, but they kissed her anyway. Gross. How did someone like October Rhap-Shitty fucking Fray get her hands on Charlie's cheeks before me?
The disdain is on full display now as every bump in the tracks reorients my gnarled gaze against hers. My mother instructed me never to be jealous because it proves you don't have it all. And how embarrassing not having it all is! But… ugh. I pinch the fringe of my scarf. She had something that I never will. The beat of Charlie's heart, ever so briefly, was hers. Might as well call them husband and wife in contrast to what I had with him. A smile, a pat on the back. "You're a really awesome guy, Lain." Charlie's voice churns in my memory. A mocktale, no longer a cocktale.
October's eyes move to mine for just a moment, and the words fall out. "Why are you staring at me? Is there a problem?" Of course I know I'm the culprit, but the raging breath of fire ironing my tongue had to breathe eventually. We're probably– almost certainly– going to die, right? Might as well let all the hot air out. "Let me guess… no one on this train's willing to entertain your tricks and games? Sad." I cross my legs in the booth. "Poor October."
I'd rip her head off here and now if the Peacekeepers were not looming in the next room over. I'm serious, I would!
