He's hands-on this time, and that goes beyond his tributes. Only so many years of being a useless fuck post-arena is acceptable.
He said that last year, though. And the year before that. Torian's games was a freebie - he's new, unseasoned. But that should have also made him the best in the game. The winner of the Exy league is expected to still be good. Why the fuck would you win at the game you suck at?
That all goes to say—Theo's been pretty lazy in his mentorships so far. What is there for him to really do? He doesn't have Raf's charm, who can talk to anyone and make it look easy. Maybe a good way to start is to interact with the other tributes. But god that's fuckin' annoying. He doesn't want to get too close to someone that's going to die. He made that mistake with Dorothy. He saw a sister in her, and his sister's now dead.
Whatever, man.
Theo just wants to get his hands dirty this year. In the grit of the Games, or the tributes, and play a part in helping them. Maybe he'll feel some redemption if he helps more than just his two tributes. As far as he knows, Marceline's sister has not asked him to help, which is fair. He's the reason her actual sister is dead, not some ally that he failed to save in time. Theo's not good at much that can help in the arena though, which is the root of the issue. Theo's good at just doing, and instinct isn't something that can be taught.
He can teach someone to fight though. Not that he has recently, excluding Gayner from Six. It's not good publicity as the team says. But also, maybe that's what he needs. He needs to be known for something outside of winning and disappearing to a slumber of alcohol and curses. A tribute would be a good start for him - someone easy (sorry, kids). If the word gets out and people riot - he's a mentor for the people! He'll kick any tributes' ass in a fight to learn.
Some kid from Four comes up to the station as he's waiting. It's a relatively unused section of the center as everyone snags up a weapon of sorts by day two. Skills with being unarmed are essential to defend yourself at the Bloodbath, though. A rough punch to the chest or kick to the legs will do just fine. "Lookin to fight?" He grinned, which was an attempt to look bolder than he felt. What if this motherfucker casually pulls out some streetkid stunts?
Actually, that could be fun. "No worries, I can't hurt you." As much as he wanted to help his tributes win this time (god, he needed someone besides Shelby), he had to do it fairly. Life's not fair, either, but the Capitol isn't either. Somethin tells him Morriah would be fuckin' dust by the time his fist actually touched Circe.
