The 97th Annual Games — Muttation List
VRAVEN [67th]: (Sand Dunes, Ravine, Black Sands, Furnace Creek)
Originally bred to clear battlefields of the fallen, Vraven’s are a chilling mix of vulture and crow that have an appetite for rotting flesh. Capable of silently swooping down despite their impressive seven foot wingspan, Vraven's are dangerous mutts, who circle relentlessly while waiting for the right moment to strike. hough they haven’t been used since the dark days to dispose of corpses that the Capitol did not want to spend the resources to identify and bury, the gamemakers have decided that such a mutt perfectly fit the tone of the sixty-seventh arena. However, unlike their predecessors, these Vraven have been bred not just to go after dead flesh, but living flesh as well.

JACK RATTLERS [60th]: (Sand Dunes, Black Sands, Furnace Creek, BRC Art Installations, Cornucopia)
This mixture of jack rabbit and rattlesnake was used primarily to distract rebels; Capitol soldiers would let one loose across a rebel’s path, so that its uncanny rattling sound would serve as an ample diversion, allowing the Capitolites to swiftly capture or kill the enemy. This worked for quite some time, until word of the rattling rabbit and the misfortune it brought passed around the rebels, and it became common knowledge that if you heard its telltale rattling, do not investigate; instead, keep on alert and run in the opposite direction as fast as possible. Frustrated with their failure, the Capitolites gave up on the creatures and allowed them to run amok in the wild as they pleased, and soon it was not uncommon to spot a rabbit with the tail of a rattlesnake in some of the warmer district climates. Don’t get too close, though; its snake genes give the Jack Rattler a pair of pointy, poisonous fangs and a bite that brings quick death.

SCORPION KING [67th]: (Cornucopia, BRC Art Installations, Ravine)
As seen with the Dragon hailing from the previous games, or the Jabberwocky from the games before, Bigger is better. Emperor scorpions generally grow to somewhere between seven and eight inches long, though the largest specimen on record is around nine inches. The King scorpion, which was specifically bred for this arena by breeding aggressive Emperor scorpions and then subjecting them to rigorous growth hormones. The single scorpion that survived all of the testing is a whopping nine feet long. This monstrous arachnid will eat anything that gets in its path, even actively seeking out large prey that it can slice and dice with its gigantic claws before pulling the bloody chunks into its fearsome mandibles. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s long tail, from which drips a fast-acting paralytic venom is razor sharp, and longer than most swords. This scorpion is inhumanly fast and is capable of attacking two tributes a round with its various appendages.

CHARON [73rd]: (Cornucopia, BRC Art Installations, Glass Labyrinth)
The uniqueness of this mutt comes from the fact that it was created by rebels, not Capitol scientists. They sit medium sized, the body of a slow loris with a dark grey color scheme. Their use comes from their long and thick tails, ending in a small structure resembling a glass lantern, containing a bio-luminescent bulb that lights up even the darkest of nights. They were created to guide rebels along night paths without using fire or tar to do so. Incredibly enthralled by metal objects, Rebels were able to buy the mutts loyalties with things as simple as a fork or knife. However, it was soon discovered that their curiosity often lead them off the beaten trails and into more...disastrous areas. When too many groups of rebels were accidentally lead into sand pits or off of cliffs, the mutts were retired. However, they've found their use inside this arena

███████ [NEW]: (Throughout)
The Gamemakers have been hard at work sewing tendons and gluing bones together to create something the Capitol has never seen before... The delicate nature of their work has sealed the secret amongst the three of them and their mad scientists. It probably won't work. But if it does? Tributes beware.

ARTISTS [NEW]: (Throughout)
Shadows and sketches come to life, Artists were part of the post-modern avant garde anti-contemporary art scene in the 90s. While many artists strove to work beyond three dimensional space, some went back to basics: animating with two dimensional figures, cartoons that could maneuver in our three dimensional world. It wasn't long before an enterprising Gamemaker thought to use the same technology to wake the shadows of the tributes themselves. These phantasms cannot speak and when they turn sideways to the viewer, they all but disappear. But then, humans are always so terrible at seeing ourselves clearly in the first place.

SKELETONS [72nd]: (Sand Dunes, Black Sands, Furnace Creek)
Whites of bones, plated armor stretched across the rib cages of skeletons. Remnants of old, decayed flesh still dangle from their fingers and jaws, and each wields its own warrior's sword. These skeletons will visit tributes in any area who aren't mandated with other tributes. To defeat them, tributes must attack the pieces that hold them together; the armor.

GEMSTONE LURKERS [74th]: (Glass Labyrinth, BRC Art Installations, Ravine)
The Gemstone Lurker was created by the Capitol as a form of camouflaged creature that they could use to survey the more mountainous areas of Panem. It's eyes appear to be made of diamonds, and the creature is of a reptilian form, resembling a large lizard or some sort. Its red scales resemble small rubies, which creates the 'gemstone' part of the name. The creature has sharp claws that are of a rather significant length, as it was meant to be able to defend itself should it be discovered during surveillance. At one time, its gemstone eyes were cameras, prepared to zero in on rebels that stepped into its path. The Gemstone Lurker, as its name suggests, lurks below ground, covering itself with dirt until someone passes by. If someone passes by that it detects as an 'intruder', it uncovers itself and attacks.

DREAM SPORE [79th]: (Cornucopia)
The most ideal way of beating one would be to find it before it finds you. Sometimes, particularly at night, if you listen closely you’ll hear their mournful cries or their hysterical laughter. You’ll see them crouched into a ball at the base of an old tree, a widow’s wail. Something within you says you should help. But be warned: once she’s aware of you, a Hag will make it her personal goal to seek and destroy. Maybe it'll be direct and lunge toward you just as soon as you reveal yourself. Or maybe if it’s close to sunrise when you come across it, it’ll draw out its hunt for longer, hunched and cackling with the wind: you’ll turn and see its long, spindly fingers wrapping around the edge of a tree but by the time you make it over to investigate, there’s nothing there. You’re certain you feel its beady, knowing eyes on you from somewhere, but you aren’t sure where until it’s on you and by that point- well… It's usually too late. Tributes who are attacked by Hags will find that they see and hear things that are not there. Their heartrates will increase and be impossible to lower without cleansing themselves using antidote.

LUMINOUS BUGS [87th]: (Throughout)
Like humans, they walk on two feet. But their limbs are long and stretched out: arms capable of climbing up walls and spindly frog-like legs which are capable of launching it ten feet in any direction. Its eyes are glazed over and milky white- you get the sense that they don’t see very well from the way its head twitches about, listening to the most minute sounds and vibrations to track its prey. It is completely hairless, with skin that is slick and damp to the touch. The only noises you can hear coming from it sound almost like clicking. Those attacked by this creature will find that their wounds fester as if infected and rotting.

ANIMATRONIC GRUNTS [NEW]: (Cornucopia, BRC Art Installations)
At first glance, these animatronic creatures may seem like tributes enjoy the arena's marvels, jumping from structure to structure as if the place is their own personal obstacle course. Upon further inspection, though, their glowing red eyes, mechanical words, and the low hum radiating around them with a threatening aura reveal that they are anything but. The animatronics are built as life-sized marionette puppets with the wires once controlling them clipped. Now, they are free to reak havoc in the arena. Their clothing varies depending on the Gamemakers' desire: do they want them to blend in with their surroundings or stick out? One constant, though, is a chipped and worn mask that covers their faces. Perhaps if a curious tribute defeats one, they'll be able to see just what lies beneath their mischievous exterior.

BLIGHT WORMS [NEW]: (San Dunes, Black Sands, Furnace Creek)
Once parasitic microbes these helminths now range from three to eight feet in length. In the daylight they are flesh-colored and segmented, with circular rows of sharp teeth which shift in a grinding motion as it feasts. They are an environmental infection, taking root in areas that have seen massive amounts of death. They primarily move underground and only emerge to hunt. Starving blight worms give off a multicolored fluorescence as its body begins to digest itself.

CORVYBS [NEW]: (Throughout)
Used to track tributes in especially low light, unless moving corvybs tend to disappear into the shadows around them. Appearing, for the most part, as a simple crow this creature is the result of splicing corvid and chiroptera DNA. These feathered creatures are eyeless, but use echolocation to track their tributes. A low hum emanates from deep in their chest, a bassline almost too low to make out, that allows them to hunt their prey with deadly precision.

CONTEST WINNERS:
RATTLEHOUNDS [umber vivuus 12b 🥀 [dars] ] : (Sand Dunes, Art Installations, Cornu, Glass Labyrinth)
Though they retain much of their canine ancestry, it is immediately clear that these creatures are something else entirely more sinister. Their necks are slender and elongated, with forked serpentine tongues they use along with an already-impeccable sense of smell to hunt prey for miles. They're quick, and nomadic, and travel in packs typically. Their feet are scaled and black, with retractable venomous claws, and their fangs also drip with the same poison, ensuring that anything that does manage to get away never gets far.

LIVING MIRAGE [kap ] : (Glass Labyrinth, BRC Art Installations, Ravine)
The Living Mirage doesn't ever register just quite right when observed. To the human eye, as well as one can tell upon witnessing the beast, it appears to be a towering minotaur with psychedelic colors swirling through its entire being, standing at least seven feet tall. At first, it appears that its vibrant fur may be all that swirls and moves as it stares at you with its shockingly bright, seafoam-colored eyes. After staring a moment longer, though, one may find it's hard to keep an eye on it properly. It's as if its form shifts while it moves, and the creature itself moves quite quickly, especially if it feels it needs to protect its territory. It isn't until it dies that one sees it for what it truly is: a swirling mess of colors, fur, flesh and horns. It's as if it's a living acid-trip.

FILGREE BEAK [umber vivuus 12b 🥀 [dars] ] : (Glass Labyrinth, BRC Art Installations, Cornucopia)
These dazzling birds have intricate, swirling beaks which make them a highly-desirable pet accessory in Capitol high society. As well, they are unable to make sound, which makes them frequent flyers in artistic spaces such as galleries and museums, adding an avantgarde freshness to the exhibits. They are also not designed to handle very extreme conditions, such as heat and weather. When stressed, the creatures are prone to behavioral outbursts.

BEETLE OF DREAMS [kap ] : (Throughout, except the Cornucopia)
The Beetle of Dreams doesn't move like a typical insect. Rather, it floats through the air at-will. It has no need to propel itself with its wings while it flies, and instead is able to control its own trajectory by feeling the forces of the energy around it. When the sun glints off of the beetle, rainbow colors are reflected back. In the dark, it glows an unnatural bright green color. The beetle is like something you'd see in a dream: about the size of a songbird, and seemingly innocent, humming an odd tune as it goes about its day. It isn't something one would expect to cause harm, but one would learn it certainly does, upon getting in its way. The Beetle of Dreams will sink its fangs into whatever it deems a nuisance, and isn't afraid to summon more of its colony for help.
