There are only so many colours. Of course someone else was going to show up in purple. Calm down, Vera.
Yet despite all logic, I’m angry that someone else is showing up in my colour — purple is mine, always has been and always will be. To be fair to her, whoever she is, we’ve taken very different approaches. My stylists included some edgier features in overall outfit, but ultimately, my look is definitely more on the girly side. The word that comes to my mind when I'm looking at this girl (not as subtly as I'd like, since my mask cuts off a substantial amount of my peripheral vision) is austere. Her deep purple ensemble stands out like a sore thumb. I wouldn't wear it but I can't deny its power. It catches your eye, keeps it there too. People are looking, whispering, and I'm no exception.
We're different enough that it doesn't really matter, I tell myself. Nobody's going to mistake one of us for the other... unless they do. The filthy rich Capitol citizens are making the most of the spread of food and drink laid out for them, grabbing at it like they're starving. I bite back a sneer. As if any of them have felt a hunger pang in their lives. But the point is, they're getting drunk. Who's to say that even after the reveals, even after they've pieced the night together in their memories, that they won't forget which girl in purple they talked to?
I have got to find out who's under that massive hat.
I swan up to the girl, get sucked almost immediately into her drama's orbit. I'm instantly made more eye catching by proximity.
"Great minds think alike," I say, straining my lips into a closed lipped smile. "I love your look, but it's a good thing I went for lilac instead of grape in the end." I reach out, delicately place a hand on the fine fabric covering her arm. "Guess who?"
