Grains of sand pelt through the air, hot to the unpreventable touch. They guide you back to the center, where it all began under the tents and canopies of silk. The welcome sign flickers, glitching through the numbers three to twenty-four, taunting you with the true reality. It's just you and one other. Perhaps you might have hoped it was three and your ally still stood by your side, but the board does not lie.
You step one foot in, and the lights shut off, immediately. Darkness surrounds you, even the strung neon lights outside have gone. Was it a trick? A symbol of the dark days that created this game in the first place? After a few moments, the lights regenerate with a flash, and the welcome sign at the front entrance shifts. Instead of a number, the new light holds up two fingers.
✌️
Is that the sign of victory or the sign of peace? Or is it just reminding you that it's two of you left in this horrific, hot, miserable place?
The band that once headlined the Bloodbath is playing a different tune than before. In the quiet hours of the arena, you could hear their feint musicality as far as the Glass Labyrinth, but today they are playing something new. The lights move around you, telling a story of what's to come. Yellow lights fade to red from top to bottom, blood dripping down gold. You're reminded of what it has taken to get you here. The toll on your aching body, the cost of a life, and the price you're paying as punishment for a century-old rebellion that means so little to you now.
The Headliners at the center of the festival play heavy rock. Whether it splits your ears or soothes them in this dire time, it's here to stay. The Headliners, raised on an unreachable stage platform now, play mindlessly, their marionette strings leading their movements.
They're playing their new record for you: The Crown of Blood. You find reprieve from the sweat on your brow underneath the festival's shadows, but there's a new itch across the top of your head: a crown.
It's yours for the taking.
Go ahead, try and take it.- = + = -
