[attr="class","bradText2"]I think my one good eye is playing tricks on me again. I pinch myself until tears well up in my eyes just to be completely certain that I hadn't lost too many of my brain cells. Coach says I'm just lucky I didn't have too many to lose in the first place. Momma says as long as I just keep being my genuine self that it didn't matter—"Oh, my sweet, gentle giant."—what sort of grades I got or what anyone said. They just didn't understand the way I thought, that's what she's always said. My chest hurts—"You're just not someone the people of Panem are used to, my darling boy."—and my stomach is flip-flopping.
I think I'm supposed to be scared, but I only smile and wave at the Peacekeepers holding the doors for us, thank them with a nod or four and offer to shake their hands. "Hi! I'm Brad. Brad Bradford. Nice to meet you- oh okay, no yeah I'm sorry I should've asked first. My momma says I have a tendency to get too excited for a boy my size, I apologize. Oh, have you met Mav? He's my boyfriend. Er, I mean, not boyfriend- date, we are on a boyfriend date or uh, a, ummm, boyfriend-to-be date?" I look to him for some help with a thoughtful crinkle in my brow. "What do you think?"
(Are you as nervous as me? As scared?)
"Oh! Wait, actually, I was going to ask you a very important question, y'know about this date. Er- maybe not exactly this date, but the date that would've been different from- from this one. Not that I don't enjoy this date! Just- um- y'know." I chuckle to myself and my nerves unravel just a bit. Sometimes wearing smiles had its advantages. "Anyway," I smile and turn around so that he can't see what I pull from my breast pocket. "Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrre you ready, matey?" And I turn around with an immitation hook as I slip an eyepatch over my bad eye. "Okay, now what do you think? Pretty cool, right? Kinda badass- oh, sorry I didn't mean to curse, heh."
(I think someone told me it was cool once.)
