D'Arcy had to give credit where credit was due, and when it came to food, the Capitol had some of the best she'd ever eaten. From the treats on the train to the lavish dinner last night, and now to the expansive tray of morning delights offered up treasures both familiar and foreign waiting to be tasted. Sure, some of the staples she had grown up with were perhaps not quite as delicious as her parents could make. The toast a bit more stale, the berries less sweet and juicy. It didn't matter much to her when she could try so many foods she had never seen before. She learned she was a fan of a fuzzy brown fruit with a soft green flesh and tiny black seeds inside of it that an attendant informed her was called a kiwifruit. She learned that not all of the balls of thick orange peel were the same; the large ones were bitter and pink inside, the tiny ones easy to peel and juicier than she expected.

As she eyed over the selection of the day, piling her plate full of new breads and fruits and creams to try out, she heard her name called out from behind. With a quick turn of her head she sees Georgie waving at a table with a bowl of fruit as her beacon. "Sit over there."

She had to admit she was a bit relieved to have received Georgie's invitation. D'Arcy learned last night as the Reapings were re-shown that she was the youngest tribute this year. The sole twelve-year-old, with a two year gap between her and the next oldest tributes competing. Georgie was one of the two closest to her age, along with a girl from District 7. Everyone else seemed so much more grown-up in comparison. No room, really, for D'Arcy to fit in. No idea where else she could possibly sit.

Tray filled to a satisfying degree, D'Arcy gratefully plops down in the seat Georgie had saved for her. "What do you think of all this? Everything is just so odd. The food is odd. The people are odd! It's nothing like how I imagined it."

D'Arcy agreed there, it had been nothing like she had imagined. In a lot of ways it felt like less; the training center felt cold and clinical, the staff polite and professional but not warm or extravagant. In other ways it had exceeded far beyond anything she had ever expected. The exotic foods, that marvellous library… odd wasn't the only word D'Arcy would use.

"It's very scary being among so many older kids," D'Arcy starts as she begins to peel an orange-skinned fruit she had yet to try, "They make me feel so little. But Georgie look! Have you seen some of the food they have here?" She holds out one of her new favourite treats. "You have to try this, they told me it's called a kiwifruit!"

The thought of her death was always lingering in the back of her mind, but D'Arcy was determined to make the most of these Capitolite wonders before she greeted it.
