OFFICIAL CAPITOL INFORMATION:
98th MUTTATION LIST
Eildritch Kodama [gamemaker kelsier ] (climbing trees) - “If one did not know better, they would think the Kodoma a ghost. The creature moves in absolute silence, with a body that looks somewhat similar to a human's in that it stands upright and has two arms and two legs. The similarities stop there, though, for this particular mutt has a wide, round abdomen, no fingers or toes, and an oval head with two dark eyes and an equally dark mouth, so that the three features can barely be distinguished from each other. The rest of its body is opalescent, smooth, and free of even the slightest feature, and it's tiny, maybe a foot and a half tall at most.” (71st OG Kodama (Stare )
Alike in build to their more gentle cousins, the Eildritch Kodama was developed further to give the mutt a more important position and take an active role in a tribute’s death. These kodama are less helpful than their cousins and have been known to do frankly, horrifically disturbing things. There are rumours that this branch of kodama have been trialed once or twice before but have only now been finally given their own classification. These Kodama tend to travel in packs and keep a close radius to their home trees. They have some odd features, such as the ability to grow or shrink in height, as well as seemingly store items in their own bodies by swallowing them whole. They also have an inner glow that changes hue based on their mood. These kodama are endlessly hungry and will eat a wide range of items but have a palette for blood and raw meat.
Attack? Biting (Knife), Blunt Rolls
Poison, Edible, or Neither? Not edible.
Balleels [gamemaker kelsier ] (mermaid bay)
Balleels are genetically modified eels crossed with a common cave bat to communicate through song. Not the Capitol's finest ideas, but one nonetheless, the balleel was a hit amongst the wealthy. People would even host concerts for their singing eels back during the 60th era and they were highly popular until it was discovered that the eel's song was just the right pitch to cause extreme euphoria in the listener. People were so infatuated that they would try to go to the source of the sound instead of stay away from it. Sailors would jump overboard, party goers would climb into the eel's tanks. Soon enough, these eels were pulled from homes and fished to extinction. During the early 90's, a young mutt geneticist decided to relook at the balleels for use in the arena. Modified further, their skin became silken in appearance and their movement in the water became as hypnotic as their siren song. Spliced yet again, this time with the genes of a shark to give them rows of sharp teeth and a taste for blood, they're the deadliest thing in water.
Attack? Knife
Poison, Edible, or Neither? Edible.
Yokaira [gamemaker kelsier ] (flower forest, the wilds, ponds)
Yokaira are and were a labour of love developed by a geneticist for their aging mother who was suffering from Alzheimer's. The creator grew up on stories of flower spirits, mischievous little things that would help people when they felt like it but most often pull pranks to teach a lesson. By splicing the genes of a common orchid with that of a kodama, they were able to produce Yokaira. These little beings have bodies similar in consistency to Kodama but have the appearance of Orchid flowers in the shape of what appears to be a tiny person. They communicate through song like their Kodama cousins but higher pitched due to their smaller size. Alone, they are relatively harmless and quite helpful in smaller groups. They can deliver written messages or even alert a tribute of a trap! In groups of fifty or more however, they become a whole different beast. Carnivorous, they will pick a person clean in a matter of moments if given the chance. bonus: this is how they sleep at night x
Attack? Knife
Poison, Edible, or Neither? Orchids are non-toxic! Salad time! (Edible).
Ovis Lupus [ tick 12a / calla ] (rubble fields, the wilds, flower forest)
*mutt contest winner!
It's weird for sheep to howl. you can hear the wolf, but you can't see it through the flock. made to protect animal herds, blend in with passive animals, defend against predators. appears as a cute lil warm group of sheep that will wander around looking for their shepherd, but when threatened their bones turn inside out and their wool moults off and their limbs twist and their teeth grow through their jaws. they're not howling, they're screaming. they're not attacking you, their biology is protecting itself. it's a stress response ): it hurts them ): stop
Attack? Jagged Maw (Spiked Blunt)
Poison, Edible, or Neither? Mmm gamey. (edible, large game)
Mothcat [ dars ] (overgrown tower)
*mutt contest winner!
The idea and aesthetic were certainly considered when creating the mothcat and the execution is nearly flawless. They're a highly sound and well-functioning new species, in fact. However, cats are still, by nature, predators. Giving any predator the ability to fly when it could not previously do so could mean a lot of terrible things, and in the case of the mothcat, scientists were lucky to discover that it just became more difficult to deny the cute little fluffballs their demanded pets by standing and walking away. These guys can flutter up and follow you, no problem. They have particular affinities to sugar and can be lulled into a trance-like state by using light. Though they are a highly-domesticated species, if some were raised since birth in the wild and taught to hunt for their meals, they could be pretty terrifying. Otherwise, they'll make cute pets for the tributes in the arena. These fluttering beings have taken to nesting in the overgrown tower for the 98th, lounging in the upper levels rafters, and sometimes lounging by a burning lantern in the stacks below...
Attack? Claws (Knife)
Poison, Edible, or Neither? small, nonedible
Dante's Ivy (throughout)
This fast-growing plant has been bred to be lethal. Originally, it was used to conceal and protect capitol goods during the war. It was simple, throw a blanket of the inky-black ivy over a couple of chests and watch as it snatched rebel after rebel, like flies to a web. It reacts to movement, and the more a person struggles, the tighter its grip becomes. But it was not a perfect monster. It assumed that, should someone remain still after being caught, it was dead. When the capitol realized that the rebels were starting to catch on, they began exploring other options, especially when they also discovered the Ivy's acute sensitivity to light. A unique poisonous type of this mutt has been used several times as well, being called Devil's Poison Ivy rather than Dante's.
Attack? Whip
Poison, Edible, or Neither? plant, inedible, poisonous
Macromantulas (rubble fields, climbing trees, ponds, mermaid bay, wilds)
The intent was to create a larger species of spider, one that would spin thicker, stronger silk that could be used by the Capitol for various purposes. Capitol scientists were able to achieve this with the genes of a normal tarantula and some growth hormone; however, rather than the house cat-sized spider they’d been aiming for, they’d ended up with a massive brute of an arachnid, as tall as a small elephant with a legspan of over ten feet. These beasts were untamable; they would encase their caregivers in thick webs of silk, then inject their lethal poison into their bloodstream, killing them within the hour. After seeing how serious the problem was, the Capitolites decided that these creations could not be allowed to live; they managed to kill most, but some of the Macromantulas escaped into the wild, and continue to multiply deep within the darkest forests of Panem.
Attack? Knife, Whip, Blunt
Poison, Edible, or Neither? inedible, poisonous
Delivery Word (throughout)
The docile and loyal Delivery Words (commonly called 'Words') are extremely adaptable and capable of crossing lands and bodies of water to deliver mail for the cost of a couple sunflower seeds. Delivery Words usually prefer to fly away from combat. Their meat is highly delicious and packed with essential vitamins. It is not hard to spot a Delivery Word, with their black feathers, gray-specked eyes, and tendency to honk loudly; however, Words can be hard to capture with its ability to withstand high acidity. The main area of the Delivery Word is at the Acid Lake middle, where its white-spotted back and straight tail feathers taunt hungry people.
Attack? Knife
Poison, Edible, or Neither? edible (small game)
Hellhounds (rubble field, climbing trees, the wilds)
Though they’re called hounds, these nasty little creations aren’t just canine. They were created for one purpose- to shred- and the jaws are all alligator, with sharp teeth and the muscles to slam their jaws closed on a piece of prey and toss it around until enough pieces fly off to kill it. The name did come from somewhere, though, and the majority of this mutt is in fact canine in origin. The creature looks like a monstrous wolf- strong fighter, enduring runner, and so dark an earthy green as to appear black. Just to add to the disturbing color factors, the eyes are more vein than sclera, turning them red. (That, like the green tinge to their fur, was actually a defect caused by trying to use such specialized alligator cells; it was originally going to be bred out, but enticed such fear in the Hounds’ prey that it quickly came to be regarded as useful.) The ears are long at birth and need to be cropped to keep from flopping dangerously close to the teeth; that trait is from the bloodhound genetics that allow the Hounds to track their prey even when it seems impossible to do so.
Attack? Bite (Knife)
Poison, Edible, or Neither? inedible
Banshee (rubble fields, climbing trees, overgrown tower, mermaid bay)
You’ll know the Banshee approaches long before you see her grisly wings, and you will know her by her wailing song. This grey predator bird keens for the dead, to mourn their lives and celebrate their transition. She has a long silver beak and matching talons. She will not hesitate to attack those who remain too close to the dead.
Attack? Beak (Knife)
Poison, Edible, or Neither? inedible, poisonous
Pixie Wasps (throughout)
Pixie wasps, roughly the size of a human hand, are experts at camouflage. Disguising themselves as large blue flowers, it's horrifyingly easy to walk into what one might think is a stunning field only to find out that you've made a terrible, and potentially fatal, mistake. Besides their alarming size, pixie wasps have reinforced bird beaks that can deliver a vicious bite. For the 79th Hunger Games, Pixie Wasps were modified to be gold instead of blue and these are the wasps that can be found in the 98th as well.
Attack? Knife
Poison, Edible, or Neither? inedible

The Stone Knight [gamemaker kelsier ] (throughout)
The Stone Knight is a mysterious entity, those that have met him in battle cannot help but wonder, What manner of beast be he? Though human in appearance, he is seemingly carved entirely from stone. Do not underestimate him however, the fact that he is born of rubble has no effect on his speed and dexterity. One can feel the power that radiates off of him from far away. Though the royal family that he once guarded has long since disappeared, this knight has not once left his post. The knight requires no food, sleep or water and wanders endlessly, guarding the areas connected to the throne room during the course of the games. The time of his kingdom has ended but he remains, as a memory of an age long passed. It would be wise to steer clear of this particular relic as best as possible.
Attack? Sword + 1 blades, strength weapon
Poison, Edible, or Neither? inedible
