Vy Pryce
District: Two
Age: Thirty-Four
The leafs were changing color, though not yet falling, as they traveled the familiar road to the great beyond past civilization. Still within the Districts walls, as their days of trouble were long behind them - at least for the now adults of course. Those distant memories passing their drive as they near the cabin they’ve frequently rented as a family throughout the past years. It was Vy’s daughter’s eighteenth birthday today, the age she was when the chaos ensued that led her back to this very campground. They could only afford tents back then.
Her breath hushes as she’s taken back to when her and Kyanite had first kissed, as though recalling it for the first time. It was an innocent dare that had them both blushing, with hardly an inkling for what was to come. Boys were occupying both of their concentrations back then with no room to spare, even if they felt the flames between each other just as much. Plus Kyanite’s boyfriend at the time Matthew had just the fire retardant to damper the evening after that dare; delivering an unprovoked truth to Vy to confess her lies about her sister actually being her daughter. It always came back to her now eighteen year old daughter, Brooklyn.
A different, more pure, chaos ensues as they pull up to their cabin for the weekend. “Nope, bigger bed’s mine suckers.” Brooklyn declares with sugar-laced words, tossing a duffle bag onto Mira and Scarlett’s lap to slow them down from getting out of the truck. The battles of the siblings has commenced.
Watching all three girls, now teenagers themselves, stampede off it’s difficult for Vy to understand her thought process back then. Of course she remembers it as if last week, but to comprehend her younger self is becoming more of a challenge the older she gets. For years she pretended as though Brooklyn was her younger sister to present a better image, the lie Matthew called her out on. “She’s my kid,” was admitted while she wasn’t sure if she should blame the game, the booze, or Matthew - before she bolted off into the woods.
At least these grounds don't contain only distasteful memories. With the girls off in their own Panem, Vy slyly takes ahold of Kyanite’s hand before she has a chance to grab a single bag from the back of the truck. In a single move she brushes the beautiful brunette locks from the side of her face to comb her own lips across her cheek. “Remember what we did in those woods so many years ago?” She teases with her lips lingering near her ear. “I got all pissy over Matt, and you chased after me?” Bad details are left out while her mind’s completely wrapped by the good. She winks.
Of course her thought’s aren’t permitted to wander too far before their youngest, and only boy, Matteo interjects his mommies brief moment alone. “Why do I always have to sleep in the living room?” He nearly whines though they know it’s his desperate attempt to fit in with the girls.
“Cause you always complain over them being too loud and staying up too late.” Vy reminds as sweetly as she can manage, which is decent after over a decade of parenting… decent for sure. “And you probably still will from the pullout couch. But you’re welcomed to stay wherever you want lil’ man.” She compromises before handing over a bag slightly too large for him. “You got this.” She urges while patting him along.
These grounds are definitely laced with both bitter and sweet memories, with far more still to come. As painful as it was it always brought them all closer together, and here they still are sixteen years later. “How old are we again?” Vy jokes, sneaking a kiss from Ky before following the others inside.
Unfortunately it wasn’t camping all those years ago that brought them together initially however. There’s a specific nerve in Vy’s heart that only the name Jins can brutally pinch. A training center being the location of misery unlike the beautiful outsides, weeks leading up to that camping trip decades ago. Her place in their odd group of misfits was still new and uncertain, yet she got the phone call to join otherwise. By the time she had gotten there the monster Jins had already left his deadly mark across the likes of them, while she remained intact. Looking back it feels to be a blur, while she took fading Kyanite within her grasp and without any knowledge of who she’d be to her one day. Jins was her dangerous stalker from childhood, while Vy would be her knight in shining armor into adulthood.
Now they prepare dinner side by side like they’ve been doing it forever, as their children bicker and laugh like they have done forever now. Fear of imminent danger is far from the Brunette’s features, lines of worrying over teenagers replacing it. She slices into vegetables hoping her kin will actually consume something healthy for a change. Again Vy’s lips comb across her face, unable to get enough of her touch and scent.
And even before the training center incident, it was the PeaceKeeper academy entangling the group together. Vy easily recalls one of her first weekends away from that place, attempting a peaceful trip to the park with Brooklyn until they were greeted with Jins for the first time. To no surprise he was forcing himself upon Kyanite just as he always did. Instinctively Vy physically removed and threatened him, while Brooklyn ran to Ky like she knew she’d be another mommy to her one day. Of course that wasn’t their first time meeting the female Brunette however.
“Goodnight girls, love you all.” Vy finalizes in attempt to depart to her and Ky’s own bed, knowing very well teenagers weren’t going to sleep - and probably not going to keep it down either. “Sweet dreams lil Man, love you to.” The last one is tucked in with hopes that at least he won’t be disrupt. As if they’ve ever had a peaceful night.
Brooklyn was hardly two at the time when she first encountered Kyanite, connecting with her instantly. It was in a hospital room while the brunette and Vy were still very much enemies. But to an innocent toddler everyone was friends, as she playful swung at the curtain separating the two at the time. With a feud rising between them it was awkward to say the least, while the toddler always managed to calm a situation somehow. Far more truths were spilled from that very beginning, while it laid the foundation of their relationship to come. Now what led them to being in that hospital in the first place?
Silence fills the cabin in an almost vacancy that worries Vy, while she decides to ignore the overthinking - embrace the unusual moment rather. Peacefully Kyanite reads one of her countless books on healing under a single light, adding to the blissful aroma. Unbothered by the chance of interrupting her, Vy snuggles against her embrace that’s usually occupied by an offspring of their’s.
“Please, lady’s first.” She had taunted her now wife so many years ago. The current stillness is replaced with the mayhem of yet another memory as she’s brought back to the underground ring. Never before witnessing the breathtaking Brunette, she refused to be bothered by her and her charm. But man could Kyanite allow her words to flow in such a spell that could bewilder so many opponents, while her punch left just as much of an impact. Together they carved their violence into the other with no remorse and far too much to prove.
Coyly a chuckle dances past the Blonde’s tongue as she secretly reminisces. “Did I ever apologize for breaking your arm when we first met?” She questions sincerely while joy still tingles in her tone - and she doesn’t dare speak of Kyanite breaking her knee first. To this day she still contains a limp in her walk from all the casualties her knee has taken… Ky being the first. She buries her face in Ky’s nightgown to conceal the tales plaguing her thoughts. Still she knows she shouldn’t of retaliated like she did.
“I am sorry.” She attempts at a genuine apology even if light giggles still intertwine it. Then she’s brought back to reality with the prolonged quietness of the household. “Should we be worried or just enjoy it?” Is questioned with sincere hope for the latter.
