They need to test it out again. A single instance can be a coincidence. Even two instances can be unrelated. You might say there isn't anything coincidental about force-feeding a statue pond water with a handful of soggy flower petals and having it turn into a living, breathing man.
There’s a building outside the throne room that they slip into. Out on the fringes, side of it crumbling, looks like it might've been a watch tower at some point. The stairs to the upper floor have collapsed, and there's overgrowth coming in through the slitted window, but the walls are mortar bricked and strong. There's a shallow alcove in the build out part of the building, threadbare cot against the wall, a little stool with a little bowl on top, all of it peeking behind a pullable curtain.
Lu drops the body across from the doorway.
It looks pretty harmless now. Slumped there.
But there's the bandages across Lu's chest still, and the tear in Tick's cloak. Something looking harmless doesn't mean that it is. He could turn back to stone. He could wake up and still want to kill them. Lu looks like he wants to get it over with now.
As long as no one follows them. Tick moves across the room to push back that curtain, just in case.
He immediately jumps back.
There's a statue waiting behind it. It's tucked in the gap between the end of the cot and the walll, in chipped armour, helmet held in one hand and the other hand splayed over its eyes. Its mouth is stretched open like it's screaming.
Tick stands there, heart pounding a little, half expecting it to start moving too.
It doesn't. The room stays very still.
"This place is so creepy." He mutters.
But they need to test it out again. And here just happens to be another perfectly willing subject.
There's water left, and the clumps of petals that he grabbed, and so Tick tips the mixture of the chalice into that open wailing mouth. Nothing happens at first. He's about to mark it off as a dud. Maybe it only works on the ones that can still move. Maybe there was something special about the boy currently tied up on the floor.
But then there's a very loud cracking noise. A crumbling. The statue splits straight down the middle and Tick watches, wide-eyed. He glances at Lu. Who, somehow, still doesn't look all that impressed.
A body falls out.
"Oh."
It's all leathery. Withered. A husk.
Tick kicks it over.
It's been dead for a very long time.
At least that's another check for yes. It worked two times in a row. Nevermind that subject number one passed out. Nevermind that subject number two is dead.
There's another beat of staring at the body.
Tick holds the chalice out to Lu. "You first."
