Chapter One: Part One
"Risata, I don't think this is a very good idea," I managed to whisper out.
"Look, Cameilla, you promised you'd do whatever I wanted to do today."
"I know," I said regretfully. Risata turned back again to look across the ditch up ahead. I followed her gaze to the sign that was partly hidden by the trees that read "No Trespassing". When I had promised to do anything she wanted, this is not what I had had in mind.
She took my hand in hers and we crept towards the small ditch, through the slight undergrowth. Small branches scratched my arms, and twigs snapped as my feet hit them. She stood up slightly and yanked on my handing, pulling me forward. I took a few steps forward, but didn't move anymore. As I slowly looked into her eyes, I saw only excitment. Quickly, I pulled my hand free of hers,"I can't." My voice was shaking and I didn't want to look her in the eyes, so I gazed down at my feet. "Please don't make me." I whispered.
"Fine. I won't but I still want to see it," she walked over to the very edge of the shallow ditch and stood there. It amazed me how at ease she was with all of this, while I was shaking in my shoes. Risata took a small step closer to the ditch. "No!" I said quickly,"Please don't. Who knows what will happen."
"Exactly." Everything seemed to quiet down, as if the whole world wanted to hear what she had to say. A slight breeze picked up and blew her blonde hair around. My hair was up in a tight bun. "Who knows? Who really knows? No you. Not me. No one. We can't see through all the trees, and we never see anyone ever enter or leave. Who knows? I want to."
Risata looked back at me as I tried to open my mouth and protest. Instead she gives me a reasurring smile I have to return. "My rebirthing is tomorrow. I have to do this for myself. I need to know. I've seen people change after. have to do this in case I change too." She turned and jumped, I closed my eyes waiting for something bad to happen.
"It's okay, scaredy cat." I opened my eyes to see Risata on the other side of the ditch laughing, "You're going to miss out!" she exclaimed and then turned and ran. There was no going after her after she disappeared into the trees. I couldn't cross that ditch. I'm sorry, Risata.
My rebirthing is tomorrow... I've seen people change after... I crawled up into a nearby tree and sat on one of the lower branches, leaning my head against the trunk. No one really knew what happened during the rebirthing process. It was a secret. On your 15h birthday, you were required to go through the entire rebirthing process. All anyone knew, was that after it was done, you recieved your job. Everyone was assigned a job in the city, and once given, you couldn't change it.
