Gale shook his head in disbelief at the TV in his room. He had seen enough. There was nothing he wanted to do more than turn the TV off right now and go to sleep. But he didn't want to. He had to watch Katniss. It was the only thing that kept him sane with her not being here. How much Gale wanted Katniss to be sitting there on his bed with him. How much he wanted to cuddle with her and rub her back. But that would never, ever be possible. Because her and Peeta were to be married. Peeta had gotten his beloved Katniss pregnant, and there was nothing he could do. Gale felt hopeless. He shook back the tears, muttering "No." over and over again. He couldn't take it anymore. He through his lamp across the room, shattering it into millions of sharp pieces. Suddenly, he heard a knock at his door. Probably his mother. He got up and opened the door, but not to his mother.
"Hi, Madge." Gale said, surprised that the mayor's daughter had come to visit him this late. "Hi, Gale." The two stood in silence for a moment, before Madge asked "Can I come in?" Gale nodded his head, and the two sat on his bed. "I heard the news. I am so sorry." Madge said, placing a reassuring hand on his scarred shoulder. He shook it off, still not saying a word. "You know, it's not too late. You can still win her back." Gale looked over at her, and finally spoke. "Yeah right. She's already knocked up with his baby." Gale said, kicking a water bottle by his feet. Madge put her head down.
"I'm really sorry, Gale." Madge said once again. He shook his head. "Don't be. I guess it's meant to be." Again, the two sat in silence for a while, until Madge spoke up. "You know, we do have something in common." Madge said, looking at Gale's scarred face. "And what is that?" he asked her. "We are both in love with someone from the Seam." Gale stared at her, a puzzled look on his face. Before he could say anything, Madge leaned over and kissed him. At first, Gale didn't know what to do. Finally, he pulled back and saw a familiar expression in her eyes. It was the same expression he gave Katniss when she wasn't looking. Want. Madge looked at him, tears welling up in her eyes. Gale didn't know what to do, so he kissed her again. Then, he felt something. It was unlike the spark he felt when he kissed Katniss in the woods that one day. It was better. They continued to kiss, their tongues swirling together. Gale then realized that this was meant to be.
This is what true love really is.
