This is a dark revamp of the classic tale of "The Tortoise and the Hare". I made it so it relates to my project under the working title, In Darkness Reigns. Post any comments here and any writing criticism if wanted. It was supposed to be written like a fairy-tale, so excuse the very minor description and little detail. I hope you guys enjoy it.
THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE
Once upon a time, a tortoise and a hare were talking under the soon-setting sun. The hare, as always, was boasting about agility, getting on the nerves of the tortoise.
"I bet I could beat anyone in a race!" said the hare.
"Even someone like me?" said the tortoise.
"Of course someone like you! Why, you are the slowest of the bunch! I could beat you easy!" exclaimed the hare.
"If you so say. Then how about a race, you and I? The first to cross the line wins," said the tortoise, calmly.
"Ha! Easiest one I will win!" laughed the hare.
So that day, all the animals gathered around to watch the race. When one would ask who would judge the race, no one knew, and no one cared. They wanted to see the race all too badly.
The hare taunted as the tortoise stretched, repeating that such a slow reptile could not win. The tortoise ignored the cocky hare.
An unknown gun popped, getting the wary and curious eyes of the crowd, and the two contestants started. The hare got a good start while the tortoise walked slowly, the fastest speed the poor thing could obtain.
The hare, at times, ceased getting ahead and would walk back to the tortoise to taunt. The tortoise pressed on, watching the crowd cheer the hare on.
Till one vanished in front of their eyes.
The hare, in confusion, stopped moving, watching as friends and loved ones poof into thin air. What was going on? Emotions ran high as the tortoise slowly walked ahead to the goal. The hare, finally snapping out of the puzzlement, ran to the goal, wanting to warn the seemingly-ignorant tortoise of their disappearing comrades.
Once the tortoise stepped on the goal line, however, a spear was thrown out of nowhere, piercing the shell and fragile body within. The hare watched as the blood seeped before the body was snatched by a big, tall figure and thrust into a large, heavy-looking bag. The unknown being sped off to the horizon, a speed that the hare had never seen or obtained before.
But the hare followed after, perhaps forever, to know about the unknown figure and solve the mystery. The hare could have followed the figure to the heavens, forever running after.
Also sorry for the cliffhanger-like ending. The beginning of the actual story starts from this ending. Comments?
