I know this is a website for the Hunger Games, but there has just been a tragic lose for me and many of my horse friends, that I really need to share with somone...
My friend Kate lost her horse Spencer(aka Silver Run) yesterday...
Spencer was very special to everyone who knew him. He was a sweetheart who was just a happy guy in general. He picked Kate, they were meant for each other. Everything Kate did, was in Spencer's best interest. It was probably the closest relationship between other horse and owner. My last happy memory of Spencer was on a trail ride with my horse Dallas and I. Kate led us through the trails and Spencer went into the river first and showed my horse it was ok.... I wish he was still here.
It all went wrong about seven months ago. It had been a normal day, Spencer was out in his pasture at Kate's college's equine facility, when a new horse came. Spencer being so easy going was turned out with this new horse. Well the new horse got violent and kicked Spencer, shattering his leg. And when a horse breaks it's leg, it's often a death sentence.
Spence was rushed to the animal hospital and had his leg put back together the best the vets possibly could, they said there was still a very good chance that he wouldn't make it. But Kate and her family were determined to everything they could to save
him. Spencer was in a sling for a long time, and in a huge cast.
But then the metal holding his leg together got infected, so they had to take it out earlier than they would have liked. Spencer seemed to be pulling through. But it was a crazy up and down battle between infection, bone growth, bone marrow transplants, everything possible was done, Kate stayed by Spencer and had to give him medication every four hours, she did so without any complaints or hesitation.
But yesterday when they went to check his leg, the marrow transplant had failed, there was no new bone growth, and another infection had set in. Spencer was in terrible pain, and there wasn't anything else the vets could do. So Spencer was put down. It's a devastating lost to our whole barn community, he wasn't even my horse and I've been crying for hours.
~We love you Spencer, and you will be deeply missed!~
